The Chesapeake Police Department posted extra security at Great Bridge High School on Thursday morning after rumors swirled on the Internet that someone might bring a weapon to the school because of a fight between two students the day before.
Schools spokesman Tom Cupitt said several students saw the fight Wednesday. The two are being disciplined by the school, he said.
Text messages and comments left on Facebook and MySpace on Wednesday night indicated a gun might be brought to the school. When school officials heard about the rumors, they contacted the Police Department, Cupitt said.
"They sent extra units out this morning," he said Thursday. "We did extra backpack searches. Everything went fine. "
Police provided an extra presence all day, he said.

Chesapeake needs to stop busing kids all over the city with their riduculous zoning. The thought process is that it's supposed to be good for the less fortunate to mingle with the more fortunate. However, the good kids are suffering from the lowered standards in education and discipline. GBHS would not have these problems if Crestwood was not there. The parents are the problem with these troublesome kids. Until the parents agree to clean up their act and discipline their kids- I do not want my child exposed to them. I am not alone in wanting my kids to go to school with kids who's parents share the same aspirations and goals for their kids(get an education, go to college, and get a legal job). I am sick of my child having to deal with the disruptions and downright inappropriate behavior from the offspring of those parents who enjoy making the kids, but refuse to do the hard work of raising them.

Graduate from a University in Florida in August, Magna Cum Laude! I say all this to say that it is unfair and inaccurate to just make generalized assumptions based on where someone comes from! 'Parents" like you are capitulating to stereotypes and thwarting the forward movement of our community by implanting all these prejudice ideologies in your children's psyche!

and inequality at Great Bridge high school it is ridiculous! My mother is a School teacher currently pursuing her PhD and my father is an Officer of the court for the Commonwealth of Virginia! For you to make such a broad inaccurate statement that the parents of children from the Crestwood community are not doing their job is not a surprise to me though because 90% of the teachers, students, faculty and staff at that school have the same prejudice distorted view of us, which makes school a very unpleasant experience for us! I was at a point where I actually wanted to dropout because of the hateful and unequal environment,but thanks to my PARENTS and their encouragement I graduated and entire academic year early and now I am Preparing to

I completely disagree with your comment! I an alumni of Great Bridge High School from the Crestwood area (class of 07). The issue is not just my Neighborhood it is every one in the community especially parents like you who put their children on pedestals and rather play the blame game while ignoring their own children's' scandalous behavior! As a former student I witnessed the students in the 'immediate' Great Bridge community tended to have a culture of addiction to adhd drugs they do not need, Vicodin,antidepressants, anything they can abuse they will. Actually it was the assistant and agreed the city should check the employees out a little better. I mean they get all our tax money. Who knows where it goes. I guess it goes to the busing program. I've had two graduate from GBHS and one to go. Thank God. I cannot wait to move. If Great Bridge residents think their property assessments have dropped, once you have no school to make this a desirable place to live you will be stuck with your house in a poor school district forever.

I graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1992. I have 3 children in the school system. My son asked if he could stay home today to get more rest but was NOT concerned with the rumors on myspace and facebook. I am very confident in every measure the City of Chesapeake has taken to rectify this issue. ANY actions on Hear-say or Rumors deserve the utmost respect. As I dropped my children off this morning, I was proud to see that The City of Chesapeake cared enough about the kids of Chesapeake City Schools to act on rumors. Over 40 of Chesapeake Police Departments’ Finest were on site! They didn't see color, they protected EVERY child. Some of you have made remarks using words like "ship and gang" to express your feelings. So here are some KEY facts you may have need to avoid sounding ridiculous. GBHS rumors
I totally agree with the comment about the kids who have been in the four fights this week all come from the Crestwood area and should attend Oscar Smith and are not from in the Great Bridge area. Someone decided to ship them our way and it's made a mess of GBHS. This act has been questioned before to the school board, but the comment is always the same that it will always be that way. Totally stupid and wrong.
I do not agree with the comments blasting GBHS saying it is not what it used to be since Hickory and Grassfield opened. Bull Crap... those schools have just as many problems .... they just try and hide it. My kids attends GBHS and I made sure they stayed there when the zoning was going on for Grassfield - I would never allow my kids to go to Hickory and a fancy building at Grassfield does not make the education.
I agree that maybe a phone call this morning on the all-call system would have been smart to warn students and parents who knew nothing. It may have helped alleviate many fears of the unknown.
