Gov. Bob McDonnell told tea party activists Friday that he'll support a proposed U.S. constitutional amendment that would give states the collective power to repeal any federal law or regulation they don't like.
McDonnell, who was greeted with cheers and a standing ovation during the first day of a state convention for tea party members, also said he is not satisfied with the $100 million in potential spending cuts that his government reform commission has identified. More need to be found, he said.
McDonnell's appearance was one of the more popular attractions at the Richmond Convention Center. Another anticipated event - a debate scheduled today that was to feature all three candidates in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District election - may be less confrontational. U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, a Democrat, won't be coming. "He decided it was more important right now to be with constituents, given that there's another debate already," said Leah Nelson, Nye's spokesperson. Other candidates in the race, Republican Scott Rigell and independent Kenny Golden, have said they will be at the convention.
All three are scheduled to participate tonight in a League of Women Voters forum at Old Dominion University's Virginia Beach Higher Education Center. The public event begins at 7.
McDonnell told conventioneers that changes in the Constitution are necessary after a half-century of congressional "bipartisan trampling" on the compact that reserves for the states any powers not explicitly given to the federal government in the Constitution.
The governor said he's seen drafts of the so-called Repeal Amendment promoted by Virginia House Speaker William Howell, R-Stafford. It would allow the repeal of a federal law or regulation if legislatures in two-thirds of the states voted for the change. Howell has said the amendment would allow states to make changes in federal laws without having to challenge them on constitutional grounds.
Creating the new state power over congressional action would "strike a balance between the central government and the will of the people," the governor said.
McDonnell also predicted that his reform commission will be in place for his entire four-year term.
" What they have found so far is low-hanging fruit," he said. "I think there's a long way to go."
While tea party organizers had said they intended to grill the governor on issues important to them, his responses mostly drew applause.
Terry Schraner, a retired teacher from Prince George County, said he believes McDonnell has the right idea in seeking to cut government.
"They have to get things under control," Schraner said, adding that the governor will have a tough time accomplishing his goals within one term. Virginia doesn't permit governors to run for consecutive terms.
More than 2,000 people jammed meeting rooms to hear speakers explain constitutional history, how to lobby and tactics for organizing in their communities. Other forums were more focused, including an event where a Heritage Foundation speaker warned that a deluge of uneducated immigrants - both legal and illegal - will swamp Social Security and the nation's other entitlement programs.
Vendors hawked T-shirts, bumper stickers and buttons sporting anti-Washington messages like "Obama bin lying" or "Notice to Congress: It's not your money it's our money." And a ctivists offered brochures, books and videos promoting conservative causes.
Leslie Jones, a member of the 912 First Landing group in Virginia Beach, said the event was a good way to meet people in tea party organizations.
"It's kind of fun," Jones said.
Jamie Radke, head of the Richmond Tea Party and the convention's chief organizer, said she hopes it will encourage tea party members to stay active.
"One of the things that is important for me is for people to see other tea party patriots. I wanted them to see that this is a big movement in Virginia," Radke said.
She and other leaders are counting on the smaller groups to help push their legislative agenda in the General Assembly in 2011.
Leaders announced they will push for three state constitutional changes. They want to abolish the state's individual and corporate income taxes and to create an education tax credit that allows people or companies a dollar-for-dollar tax cut for any money spent for private schools. They also want an amendment to prohibit the forcible government purchase of private property for economic development, job creation or "tax revenue enhancement."
Several GOP leaders will participate in a forum today. State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and former U.S. Sens. George Allen of Virginia and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania will be part of a panel. "The tea party is the peasants outside the castle walls with pitchforks," said Paul Henick of Chesterfield County. "The government is inside the castle. The people should not fear the government. The government should fear the people."
Henick, who openly wears a handgun and is a member of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, stressed that he's not preaching violence but peaceful change. However, he said, the right to bear arms helps make sure that government leaders will listen.

the only control over our lives will come from corperations
"This is the reason the federal government is dictating our lives and destroying the rights of the American people." This isn't an intellegent statement but one of rhetoric and sir, you and me are the FED. You and me are not the corporate interest that supports the tea party nor the GOP (You are not being told that by FOX.) That is about as simple as it can be said
McDonnell & The Tea Party
How many philosophical members of this ranting are going to go to the polls and try to make your voices heard. We all tend to talk a good, researched political stance and appear to be sophisticated in our take on the political landscape, but are we really actively engaged? We are so divided as a nation. We can't even agree on the simplest item. This is the reason the federal government is dictating our lives and destroying the rights of the American people. Whether I believe in the Tea Party or not, at least they are engaged. If you believe they are too extreme, what are you doing to counter-act that engagement? States are subject to the federal govenment even if we The People do not agree with the irrational, unfair actions. By all means, let them continue while the majority sits quietly by and relinquishes their rights.
Great Bob
Any chance you might tackle an issue that actually concerns Virginia rather than pie in the sky that you're using to polish your resume for senate? How about another tunnel in Hamptons Roads or many other real VA issues. I suppose you'll need to use state funds to travel to all 50 states to push this idea? All politicians should be not only term limited but total years in public office limited so we don't get career hacks like him and Allen and so many others.
What I cannot understand after reading right wing posters
This deniability of who spent the money (They speak on those spending our future,) who they supported and why they will not look into who funds the tea party in corporations. There is never going to be equality or a restoration of the middle class if we support those vested in this private solution. It seems crazy that things are twisted to such an extent that deception is so readily excepted. They aregue for less oversite after all that has gone on. folks who support them seem to shun the truth in this. I'm just blown away that there are some who can be swayed by the falsehoods. Every fact check on specifics, shows that most of these so-called State's right fundamentalist's plateforms are not fact in the tea party stances. The people don't have an understanding of what is really being touted. Or I'm just an optimist.
dang those glass houses and throwing rocks
If you haven't notice (many liberals just choose to ignore) that the same could be said of "small" internet donations. Can you guarantee that EVERY donation to Democratic Party candidates in 2008 was from PEOPLE within the US or from CITIZENS of the US?
Is that SILENCE? So, in other words, are you calling on investigations of your political opponents. Are you saying that you want the power of the government to silence any opposition?
Clean up your own house and build with something other than glass. That way when you cast stones you don't throw through your own walls of glass.
No, however lets be honest
Are coming in from Corporations way beyond that of the Dems . Match the attempts through Health care, regulation to financial, then place big oil , an excessive disproportion to (Multi-national corporate monies going to GOP) Simple question; Who is doing for the american public? (I should trust this?) What I cannot understand is that when you see that vested interest and you see the freeze, on money and hiring, excess that these entities are holding you have to see the Forrest from the trees. If we don't pay the dues now and convolute where are losses were (Our wars). The GOP wishes us to have a strong Military as a federal entity and its directive took us there. Fine, we except the idea of trying to do right in these foreign nations. However, at the same time it becomes ridiculous that the tea party plays blind to the slow gradual swing from the place we were is going to must to take time. There is no consistency of the idea of spending as the money used now is being used the best it can best under the circumstances (So-called Obama care; what was the suggestion for alternative;NONE. when we as americans demanded a change in Health care) Then sorry to be a bit tangential; match
What about in his own state?
How about the rights of the people to repeal laws or politicians in VA? It takes an act of god to get a measure on the ballot. In this great commonwealth, all power is held in Richmond by a string central government. Ironic, isn't it?
This governmor should be removed from office
What an utter failure of a man, and an egregious misuse of office; unpatriotic, selfish and a flailing gesture to liars and thieves of this corporately controlled movement. This makes me sick
removal
Obama first.
We are talking about the GOV
Obama actually represents the interest of the country and clearing this GOV does not
