Too-scary Chesapeake monster display shut down

Posted to: Business Chesapeake Halloween News

CHESAPEAKE

They're creepy, and maybe a bit kooky. But for some, Georgette Gaynor's monsters were too spooky.

After several complaints and a few screams from startled customers, Gaynor had to take down her 78 life -size monsters that populated the Greenbrier Dodge showroom at 1717 S. Military Hwy.

Gaynor said she was told that some people objected to the display.

"They were so real-looking," said Tom Robertson, Greenbrier Dodge general sales manager. "More than one person would walk in the door, and not paying attention, would look up and be startled by one of the monsters in front of them."

One was so scared she screamed and fell, Robertson said.

Gaynor, of Virginia Beach, spent six days hauling her monsters, fashioned out of spray foam, plastic netting and wire-mounted on PVC pipe, to the dealership, along with 700 pounds of weighted bases and iron poles to display the creatures. It took three days to set them up. The display was to be open to the public, and all were for sale for $150 to $250.

Two years ago, she displayed her monsters at The Gallery at Military Circle as part of an effort to collect non-perishable foods for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

In 2007 her creatures were exhibited to help raise money for the Kempsville Middle School drama club. About five years ago, she also created a haunted hall at Norfolk State University.

Her displays include a foursome of werewolves playing Texas Hold 'e m and Frankenstein's monster, along with a gallery of ghouls with names like Johnny Eyeballs, Crowbar Pete, Cruell Krull and Gruesome Guntar.

While scaring people was one thing, losing sales was another. One customer called the display demonic, Robertson said.

"Some people take the holiday of Halloween in a different way," Robertson said. "They'll plan out costumes and decorations three to four months in advance. But others consider it satanism."

The final straw was when one potential customer refused to walk through the showroom.

"He told us he loved his salesperson, but he couldn't buy a car in this environment," Robertson said.

The dealership offered to bring a car to the customer's home, but the potential customer refused, citing the company's business environment and beliefs.

"It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do," Robertson said. "But I run a business here. Two to three percent of the people who saw the display didn't get the right feeling about the message we were trying to have with Halloween, and once they go out and tell five others, then it can cause more problems."

Gaynor was paid a bonus for quickly dispatching the display and to make up for some loss in sales of her creatures.

"This broke my heart," Robertson said. "But for some, Halloween is devil-worshipping."

Oh Heck - it's all in fun...

Some Car dealers float giant inflatable gorillas...

So what if someone has time to set up some Halloween 'decorations' ? I thought it was great that they aren't trying to charge for folk to 'take a tour'.

Folks seem to be lacking a sense of humor anymore...

But in sales, one must do what the customers want...oh well, fun while it lasted.

She can use my business

She can put her creations in my business! The ones in the photos dont even look scary, and I think she does a fabulous job! Some people just take things too far.

halloween

Ok, first of all, no, Halloween isnt a holiday but All Saints Day is, at least in the Catholic church. "Halloween" is derived from All Hallows Eve, the eve of All Saints Day. Superstitious people way back the day believed evil spirits walked the earth that one night, so they came up with all kinds of ways to scare them off: carving scary faces in gourds (jack o lanterns), dressing up in scary clothing, etc. It is NOT about satanism. Ok, history lesson over. Now, if some people out there have taken the day and warped it into something its not, we cant change that but we also dont have to give creedence to it either. People have also warped Christmas into something it never was about originally, too, but strangely, no one seems to have a problem with that. Point being, educate yourselves, people of the public, before making judgments.

Halloween

Oh BTW, Halloween is NOT a holiday.

Some people.....

Some people should just stay in their houses, close the blinds and drapes, turn off their TVs, Radios and computers and don't look at the paper and then sit there quaking, terrified that some little part of the real world might invade their safe place! Show some sense people. BOO!

lost this one too

I hope keeping the idiot customer was worth it to GD. How many more cars do they think he will buy in his lifetime? I'm in my early 30's and have a lifetime of car buying still ahead of me. GD will never receive any of my business if they are the kind of business that bows to such a moronic man. If they had kept the display up and said "get over it old man, it's all for fun" my next car would have been from them. Looks like from reading the comments they've lost a lot of other potential customers too. I hope businesses read thsee comments, they should be a valuable marketing tool, real potential customers revealing what they really like. Not some marketing agency insisting the only people worth advertising to are baby boomers. Keep doing what you do Georgette! Your art is amazing. Not many people have talent like you.

I won't go to a certain

I won't go to a certain dealership because the lady in the commercials scares me.

You bet!

Whoo! It's true, that lady would scare one of Mrs. Gaynors goulies!!

People in sales have to deal with all kinds of people

Figure out who they are and what they want. Usually a very good deal prevails. On the other hand, some people you have to deal with, as you sometimes find out, would be better served by a mental institution! Sometimes it's better to let these folks walk away- no sale!
