Billy Joel - 'The Hits'

Yep, it’s true – Billy Joel is back with yet another greatest hits release . This time, it’s a single disc, simply entitled “The Hits.” While the collection is a great gathering of Joel’s songs that were certified hits, defined by radio play and record sales, unfortunately, it’s not necessarily representative of his  best  work.

Some of the highlights are 1973’s “Piano Man,” 1980’s “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” and 1993’s “River of Dreams.” Joel’s American history lesson in the form of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” is a standout track, which always amazes the listener  with the vast amount of information included in the lyrics . These are all songs that any casual Billy Joel fan will recognize , but missing are some of the songs that helped define Billy Joel as one of the most talented American songwriters,  such as “The Ballad of Billy the Kid,” “Miami 2017,” “Captain Jack,” “Goodnight Saigon ” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.”

Regardless, “The Hits,” is a good disc, but it really only could be considered Billy Joel 101.
