City officials hope UFL team helps turn around Sportsplex

Posted to: Local Government News Sports Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The United Football League's announcement last week that it would make the Virginia Beach Sportsplex the home of the new Virginia Destroyers could be a much-needed touchdown for the Sportsplex, city leaders said.

The UFL could help turn around the Sportsplex, which has stumbled along for most of its 12-year history. The city spent $10.6 million to build the venue as a soccer stadium to attract a professional team. But Major League Soccer never came.

"I think football is a lot more popular of a sport than soccer, at least in the U.S.," Councilman Jim Wood said. "The prospect of having NFL-quality players will certainly be a big draw."

In early 2009, the City Council turned over the operation of the Sportsplex to Chuck Thornton and his Hometown Sports Management. Most council members were eager to free the city of the $447,000-a-year cost to run the facility and hopeful that a private firm could do a better job booking events.

The first thing Thornton did was tear up the grass field and install synthetic turf at a cost of about $800,000. Thornton also opened the field to other sports, including high school and youth football and lacrosse.

The result?

Two years ago, the city hosted about 40 events in a year. Between August 2009 and June of this year, Sportsplex hosted 286 events.

"That's a tremendous improvement," said Cindy Curtis, the city's parks and recreation director. "That's the difference in artificial turf."

If the Virginia Destroyers come, the venue, which can seat 6,500, will have a professional sports team calling it home, Thornton said.

Still, whether pro football is successful in the Sportsplex will depend on how well the league is able to market the games, how impressive the half time shows are and on the players and coaches, Thornton said.

"It's got to be an experience," Thornton said.

Part of that experience includes the pre-game ritual of tailgating. It's not prohibited, per se, in Virginia Beach. But drinking alcohol in public is, and the Sportsplex parking lot is a public place, Deputy City Attorney Rod Ingram said.

The Virginia Beach Amphitheater, which is near the Sportsplex, prohibits tailgating.

Hometown Sports could apply for a permit from the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to allow drinking in Sportsplex parking areas, Ingram said.

Thornton said he's been assured he could get permits.

"You can't do it without tailgating," he said.

The UFL is also asking the city to forgo admission taxes on tickets to offset the $400,000 to $600,000 the league plans to spend in improving the Sportsplex and adding more temporary seats. City officials stress the financial arrangements still need to be finalized.

"It's not a done deal yet," Curtis said. "I am thrilled with the opportunity."

I'm hoping that the Destroyers are a success

in not only VB, but all of Hampton Roads. And why should Norfolk house all sport teams? If we're truly looking forward to becoming a region, it stands to reason that each city should have something to offer. I do question the article's statement that the Sportsplex has approx. 6,500 seats. In previous articles about the Destroyers coming to the Sportsplex, it was stated that there were approx. 7,000 seats. And if I remember correctly, I believe that when the Sportsplex first opened, it was stated that it contained approx. 9,000 seats. (Also, the original "owner" of the UFL team stated that he planned to build an add'l 11,000 - 12,000 seats to bring the Sportsplex capacity to 20,000 seats.) How are we "losing" permanent seat capacity?

Va Beach is the problem

As with the Amphitheatre next door the city will only allow the events to bust citizens just trying to have a good time. Save your dollars and stay away from events held in Va Beach.

Why so negative? This is good news!!!!

Folks, I am surprised at all the negative comments about this. What is the downside? The taxpayers have already paid for this facility. While that probably should not have happened, it happened anyway. The SportsPlex was bleeding Beach taxpayers slowly at a cost of about a half million a year. Now a private venture has come along, improved the facility, and it is being put to good use. A private business is hoping to bring a professional Football team here. Again, good news. This is a reson to celebrate. As long as there is an understanding that there will not be any taxpayer bailouts in the future, should the team fail to generate sufficient revenues, then this is really good news.

complain

People just complain just to complian

Wrong again...

"'That's a tremendous improvement,' said Cindy Curtis, the city's parks and recreation director. 'That's the difference in artificial turf.'"

Artificial turf is the agent of change??? Really?!?!?!

BUZZZZ!!! WORNG AGAIN!!! The improvement at the sportsplex is actually the difference between good, competent management and the poor, head-up-one's-nether-region management we've come to expect from the city of Virginia Beach over the past 10 years.

Gotta love our city leaders' capacity for self-delusion...

Light Rail

Too bad this isn't in Norfolk, where it could be another reason for VA Beach to pursue light rail. NSU and Harbor Park are both on the Norfolk line. Then you could argue that we are one region, and putting a team at Sportplex would not be in the best interest of all. Silly me, but I was taught the a strategy defined all your actions, and all your actions should support your strategy.

Region, yes, Independent City, yes

True, this is a geographical region, but more so each is an independent city. Each controlled by an egotistical government. Regional? Then why did the Tidewater Tides become the norfolk tides? Why did the HR Admirals become the norfolk admirals. All due to norfolk council ego.

Regional in fiction only, not in true form or by actions.

Stand by to launch !!! Go Destroyers !!!

I am glad to see that our region is bringing a United Football League franchise to our Hampton Roads region. The Virginia Destroyers bring the league total to six teams along with Sacramento, Hartford, Orlando, Las Vagas, and Omaha.

There’s a good chance that the season schedule will be expanded to 10 games per team, 5 home - 5 away. I am already looking at a possible week-end in Vagas and another in Orlando (Disneyworld) to root for our team, the Virginia Destroyers. Maybe those other fans would also like to visit our beautiful homeport of Southeastern Virginia.

Be sure to contact Cox Cable to hookup HDNET. That network carries half of all UFL games while VS network will telecast the other games. Be sure to check out the two remaing UFL regular season games on Friday, November 19th (HDNET) and Saturday, November 20th (Versus – VS Network). The championship game will be on Friday, November 26 (Versus – VS Network).

The Destroyers, Haze Gray and Underway !!!

good for them!

I will be attending games! Glad to see someone has some vision for this area and is at least making an attempt to drag HR into the 21st century. For all you complaining that they didn't try to get NFL or NBA here you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Quit your whining and try showing some support and instead of complaining, apparently nothing is good enough for you people. Whatever!

I sincerely hope they're going to address the Landstown Rd getting into and out of the Sportsplex, I can see that becoming serious gridlock!
