Election results: U.S. Rep. Jones re-elected in N.C.

Posted to: Elections News U.S. House Elections North Carolina

U.S. Rep. Walter Jones has won another term in Congress representing northeastern North Carolina.

Unofficial results Tuesday show Jones defeating Democratic candidate Johnny Rouse of Winterville and Libertarian Darryl Holloman in the 3rd District.

Jones is a Pitt County native first elected to the House in 1994. He's been a critic of both Democratic and Republican administrations. He was one of the first elected Republicans to call for a timetable for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Jones may be best known for leading a campaign in the House when France opposed U.S. military action in Iraq in 2003 that caused the chamber's cafeteria to offer "freedom fries" and "freedom toast."

Rouse works at the East Carolina University medical school.

The 3rd District includes Camden, Currituck, Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties.
