FEMA center for flood damage grants opens in Camden

Posted to: Hurricanes - Storms News Weather North Carolina

A FEMA disaster recovery center opened Monday in Camden County, one of 14 counties eligible for flood damage assistance following Tropical Storm Nicole.

About 50 homes in Camden County were damaged during the September storm, but so far eight people locally have registered for aid, said Julia Jarema, spokeswoman for the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management.

Last week, federal and state officials added Camden, Martin, New Hanover and Washington counties making a total of 14 counties eligible for aid from FEMA. A disaster recovery center opened Monday at the South Camden Fire Department at 114 Sawyer Creek Road.

Since the storm, FEMA has awarded $4.5 million in grants and loans with 3,685 people registered in the 14 counties for possible aid. Bertie and Craven counties were the most affected by the storm where 625 and 630 respectively have registered for help. Homeowners could received up to $240,000 to repair or replace homes. Renters could receive up to $40,000 for personal belongings.

To register call 800-621-3362, apply online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or visit the local disaster recovery center.

No problem with the office

If someone is collecting for flooding, am I the only person wondering if the people affected have been victims before, once, twice, thrice??? If so, this needs to be stopped. We shouldn't be financing people to live in flood zones.
