HAMPTON

A 19-year-old Hampton woman died late Thursday when the car she was riding in hit a tree, Hampton Police said.

Samantha Lynn Bartley was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 1500 block of Briarfield Road just before midnight.

Bartley had been a passenger in the car of a 25-year-old Hampton man. According a police press release, the driver lost control of the car and struck a tree after careening off the road. Speed is believed to have been a contributing factor to the crash.

The driver, whom police did not identify Friday morning, was taken to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries, the release said. Charges against him are pending.
