IRS seeks to refund $2.3M to Virginians. Are you on the list?

Posted to: Banking Business

The IRS announced Wednesday that it has $2.3 million of Virginians’ money and wants to return it. The Internal Revenue Service was unable to deliver refund checks to 2,239 taxpayers in the state because of mailing address errors. Undelivered refund checks in Virginia average $1,046 this year, compared with $903 last year, the IRS said.

A taxpayer expecting a refund can update their addresses and check the status of their refund with the “Where’s My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. Taxpayers also can call 1-800-829-1954.

“If you think you are missing a refund, the sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your money,” said Jim Dupree, a spokesman for the tax agency.

To avoid the problem of mailing address errors, the IRS urged taxpayers to use direct deposit. Electronic filing also helps prevent lost returns, the agency said.

The IRS does not contact taxpayers by e-mail to alert them of pending refunds, it said. Such messages are common identity theft scams.

Half of the names I saw on the list were Hispanic names. I'm glad they paid their taxes before returning home.

A refund this late in the year?

If someone is sitting around waiting for a refund
at the end of November, they need a life.

Terminate the income tax

and implement a national sales tax. Above "mail problem" solved, paperwork reduced to almost nothing, eliminates a major weight (by reducing the size and cost of IRS) on the federal budget, eliminates existing tax loopholes, and people then pay what they can afford to pay in the only fair tax that can be implemented.

can you say Sting?

Doesn't the City of Newport News run a few of these unclaimed property/money stings each year and round up a bunch of people?
