WINDSOR
A woman was in her yard holding her pet Jack Russell terrier around mid morning Tuesday when the small dog was attacked by a pit bull, said Isle of Wight County spokesman Don Robertson.
When the 76-year-old woman tried to separate the dogs, she too was attacked by the neighbor's dog, he said.
The woman, who lives in the Peanut Drive area of the county near Windsor, was flown by Sentara Nightingale helicopter ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Robertson said. Her condition was unavailable Tuesday. She suffered injuries to her head, but the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, he said.
The Jack Russell also was injured.
Robertson said the pit bull is being held pending the outcome of an investigation.
The woman was not identified.

Humans
are a dangerous breed.
Focusing on Breed misses the issue
Diesel was CHAINED. Both the dogs were UN-NEUTERED. Chained, un-neutered dogs are the top commonalities in dog aggression. Both the dogs were TERRIERS with similar personalities and determination. Dogs have no concept of size. The JRT (Jack Russell Terrier) reportedly taunted Diesel so when the JRT came by this time and Diesel got loose, Diesel said "enough". Neither dog was significantly injured. Diesel likely never intended to bite the human but she got in the way. An inexperienced handler should NEVER get between two sparring dogs. The dogs might well have worked it out. I am deeply sorry for all involved but if we want to end stories like this, DON'T CHAIN DOGS, NEUTER YOUR PETS and have thoughtful discussion on the real issues.
I dont believe what I am
I dont believe what I am reading here. A woman was attacked by a DOG. The Pit was secondary. I personally feel that all aggressive dogs and their owners should be put down. Still the main issue is the womans well being. Argueing about a pit being good or bad depending on the training is just plain stupid. To each their own. I own a Lab also. He is gentle. But if he snaps, he could hurt someone also and I would take responsibility for his actions.
but on a happy note micheal vick was a star
the other night.
Ridiculous!
These dogs take a lot of work
and they are a huge responsibility as well as liability.
I have one that I've worked with and trained for ten years of his life. I've never put him in a situation to fail.
Not many people are willing to do that, yet they get these animals without any respect for the breed what so ever.
It's unfortunate that the dog will need to be put down, but I fully believe that the people that own and breed them carelessly should be right along side the dog.
Dangerous Breeds
I keep saying, If you own a dangerous breed, and make no mistake pit bulls are a dangerous breed, you should have to have special training and be licensed to handle them, and you should be criminally liable if they get loose and hurt someone or attack another animal.
I agree with most of this. I
I agree with most of this. I think people should be trained and their yards accessed with the ability to hold an animal.
However, I don't know if you can charge someone because all animals are unpredictable. You don't know what they will do because they are their own person.
Yep
Not a coincidence that “pit bull” and “dog attack” shows up so often in the same story. They need to go. I don’t suggest a blanket law that makes them illegal and take away a family pet that may never hurt anyone or anything but I would like see it illegal to own a fertile one. Oh shut up PETA. Yes, I’m suggesting moving in the direction of making them extinct.
I agree, they should be
I agree, they should be treated as if they were a weapon and if you own a weapon you are responsible for that weapon or procecuted for letting it run around biting folks. I own a weapon and don't have any problem using it on one of these animals.
Honestly though, ANY dog can
Honestly though, ANY dog can do this. ANY...I have been bitten by too many stupidly small dogs than anything because of their complexes of being so small.
You hear so much about this because it's a hot button news story. It will get reactions but I can tell you that a lot more breeds do attack people...they just don't get much of a reaction beyond, "The person probably did something to provoke them."
