Republican Hurt ousts Obama-backer Perriello in Virginia

RICHMOND

Republican Robert Hurt has defeated freshman Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello in a race viewed as a referendum on President Barack Obama.

The race was closely linked to Obama even before the president appeared Friday with Perriello at a rally in Charlottesville.

It was Obama's only appearance for an individual House Democrat for 2010.

Perriello was a loyal backer of key Obama policy initiatives, including the cap-and-trade clean energy bill, health care reform and the economic stimulus package.

Because of it, Hurt attacked Perriello as a rubber stamp for Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Obama lost Perriello's rural, conservative district in 2008.
