Hampton Roads Transit will tow a light-rail vehicle through parts of downtown today as part of its testing program, to ensure the train makes proper contact with the overhead wires that will eventually power it.
The vehicle will be towed from the Norfolk State University station at Brambleton Avenue to the MacArthur Square station at City Hall Avenue. Testing will last from 7:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.
Flaggers and police escorts will direct traffic. The test is dependent on weather conditions.

In light of the fraud by HRT, it looks like the train has derailed before it can be tested.
A Test....Here's a BIG Test......
Here's a test....Who will check ticket's for riders of light rail? According to a new rumor floating around, there will be a place to buy a ticket, but no turn style in place or ticket collector to ensure people have paid. Light rail will be operating on the "honor system"....in other words...free.
Check out those little booths they have set up to ride....do you see a way to prevent people from just hopping on? Most system's I've ridden either have a ticket collector or a turnstyle to deposit your ticket.
Guess the ridership will be high!!!!!!
only if the charge for it
I think we should charge people to ride the rail during the tests.
An idea
In keeping with the spirit of the project, couldn't they just forge some test results and not actually do any tests?
This should be interesting
Tomorrow's headline: Light Choo Choo fouls up traffic in downtown Norfolk during testing. Then the story will be "If and when it's running it's only going to be worst. Mayor says maybe we should have elevated the track downtown."
"The test is dependent on
"The test is dependent on weather conditions."
Because the choo choo won't be chugging if it snows or rains.
"The test is dependent on weather conditions."
Really? Today's forecasted 2-4" of snow should provide a wonderful opportunity for Light Rail testing. This is the best time to test...when the weather is crappy. We shouldn't wait until conditions are "desirable" to see if things work.
Hmmm...
Knowing Norfolk, maybe they should have put a glass bottom on it and painted fish between the tracks...
Wouldnt
it make more sense to do these types of tedious slow tests at night when most people are sleeping and not trying to get around downtown 2 weeks before Xmas with all of the shopping traffic and all this is going to be funny!
Snail paced comedy
The Simpsons "Monorail" episode that was strangely similar to Norfolk's Light Rail snail paced disaster. A group of naive hicks become enamored with the idea that having a Monorail will put their fourth-rate city on a level with bigger cities. In the end, they get bilked by a fast talking salesman who is in bed with the local politicians.
