Jon Cash's exit hasn't affected ratings at WAVY-TV

Posted to: Business News Portsmouth

So much for the "Jon Cash effect" on ratings.

When Cash, a popular WAVY morning weatherman, left the air in September, fans said they'd leave the Channel 10 station in protest. (Cash said he was fired because he had said he would switch to preaching full-time next year; WAVY hasn't explained his departure.)

Ratings for the November sweeps period show WAVY still on top from 5 to 7 a.m., though WVEC (Channel 13) - which started a 4:30 a.m. newscast in August - comes a close second. WAVY's president and general manager, Doug Davis, declined to comment on Cash's effect on ratings, calling it a "personnel matter."

Tod Smith, his counterpart at WVEC, which had been pulling closer to WAVY even before Cash departed, noted that Channel 10 has been "a longtime leader" in the morning. "Tradition plays into it a lot," said Smith, whose station tops the chart for evening newscasts.

As for the possibility of a storm of Cash supporters clicking elsewhere, "a lot of times, when something like that happens, there's an initial reaction," Smith said. "But just looking empirically at the data, I don't see it."

That doesn't mean it might not happen. "If you were going to see something like that, it's more over time," said Jeff Hoffman, the GM of WTKR (Channel 3), which leads at noon and is in a virtual three-way tie at 11 p.m. "It's not an instantaneous response."

Wavy 10

I no longer watch WAVY-10 for news or weather. With the firing of Jon Cash, I switched to Channel 13 for my updates.

The Jon Cash story

Jon Cash story on pilot on line has nine lives, it keeps going and going and going. The pilot must be very interested in Jon Cash for some unknown reason, why else would they keep bringing him back. I still watch channel 10 even if they do have a sub par weather staff (you can't make fun of their clothing, you get deleted from this post if you do) Everyone has seen a news story we wanted to make a comment about and it was gone before you had a chance, not Jon. I wonder if a movie is coming out in 2011?

I Still miss Don&Kerry...

My off subject comment went away too, possibly to the cornfield. I wonder why this non story is still here.

NO Effect!

Why would it effect anything, his twin Jermey is there taking up the slack.

HA!

Cant be twins!! Jeremy has the personality of a wet rock. Like Cash or hate him, he had personality. Jeremy is truly the most boring individual to grace the small screen. I have seen people in comas with more personality!!

:)

the Taco Belle

Joe Jackson

Don't feel bad about the VP's deliberate censorship. I submitted my comment at 1:24 it is till awaiting staff approval. It's now 4:57

I care...why?

I care exactly as much today as I did several months ago.

So...

...where were the headlines when Dave Parker was let go from channel 3 (WTKR)? He was my preference for weather reports...not Jon Cash.

Come on one more story about anything to push this

waste of space off the front page..............

National Weather Service’s website. I have eastern Virginia book marked. I see it when I want it. No dumb, annoying voice inflections. No waiting through “news” segments as read by overly made-up women. No commercials. I’ve found it to be more accurate than radio, television or commercial websites.

One does need to know how to read.
