Residents say yes to serving mixed drinks on part of Hatteras

Posted to: Business News North Carolina

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.

Voters on the southern end of Hatteras Island settled a long-standing debate Tuesday by granting local restaurants the right to serve mixed drinks.

The referendum - triggered by a petition signed by 25 percent of voters - passed by a vote of 555 in favor and 322 against, according to unofficial results from the Dare County Board of Elections.

The new policy affects only Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Restaurants in the northern villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon are still prohibited from serving liquor. Beer and wine are OK.

Proponents of the change said it would satisfy tourists and prove to be a financial boon for island restaurants. Some island churches have opposed the serving of mixed drinks on moral grounds.

Beef it up

I hope the new sheriff in Dare County puts more patrol deputies on the road. DUI's on Hatteras Island are going to dramatically increase. And with each one is a trip for that deputy up to Manteo to the magistrate and jail. More ambulance trips and helicopter flights, too.

I guess the increase in sales taxes will balance out the increased public safety expenses, but won't compensate for the maiming and loss of life along Hwy 12 as they drive home under the influence.

Not True

Beef it up......not true! None of those things you stated are going to happen! The reason....now a person does not have to drink an entire bottle of liquor before leaving the restaurant...the bar tender can cut the person off if they think the customer has had too much too drink. Also, people drink at their cottages prior to going out to dinner...because they could not buy a drink while having dinner. So I do not think any of your statement are valid. But, I do understand your posting due to free speech!
