Veronica Gonzalez joined The Virginian-Pilot after making the 200-plus mile trek from Wilmington, N.C., on Dec. 25, 2010—the eve of a historic snowfall that blanketed Hampton Roads. She briefly wondered if she’d taken a wrong turn somewhere when the snow kept her from leaving the house for a day.
When she did leave the house, Veronica joined the newspaper as the public safety reporter for Chesapeake and Suffolk after 10 years as a professional journalist. Veronica’s journey to The Pilot has more twists and turns than an unplowed road.
In Wilmington, she worked for the StarNews for nearly six years covering everything from breaking news to immigration. Most recently, Veronica covered courts in New Hanover and Pender counties in Southeastern North Carolina.
Before relocating to the South in 2005, she lived in Chicago and worked for a bilingual weekly newspaper called Reflejos. So yes, she does speak Spanish. Before that, she worked for the Daily Herald in the Chicago suburbs, and many moons ago did a brief stint at the Chicago Tribune.
But it was in the Southwest that Veronica started her career in 2000 as a professional journalist where she cut her teeth covering cops and courts for the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper.
She’s won numerous awards throughout her career, including for video production and photography, and in 2010, she was part of a team that nabbed second place for investigative reporting from the North Carolina Press Association.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and a master’s from the University of Illinois Springfield.
When she’s not sliding around the streets in snow and ice or chasing ambulances and cop cars, Veronica enjoys sliding down mountains in the Southwest.
