Dominion signs deal to buy solar power in North Carolina

Posted to: Business Dominion Virginia Power Environment North Carolina

Dominion North Carolina Power announced today that it plans to harness the power of the southern sunshine from a solar power station to be built near Jackson, N.C.

Dominion, owned by Dominion Resources Inc. in Richmond, signed a 15-year agreement to purchase the 1.4 megawatts supplied by 510nano Inc., a Washington, D.C., company that focuses on environmentally conscious technology. 510nano plans to start building its solar plant in March on seven acres in Northampton County, about 45 miles southwest of Franklin.

The companies declined to disclose the contract terms.

It would be the largest solar-powered plant serving Dominion’s customers. The company said it is also working on plans for a 4-megawatt solar plant in Halifax County.

By comparison, the coal- and biomass-fueled plant that Dominion is building in southwest Virginia will generate 585 megawatts of electricity, and the company’s nuclear power plant in Surry generates nearly 1,600 megawatts with two units.

Dominion North Carolina Power, the sister company of Dominion Virginia Power, serves about 120,000 customers in the northeastern part of the state, covering most of the Outer Banks.

"You know what else is a product of the past? Solar panel manufacturing in Massachusetts. The state gave Evergreen Solar at least $45 million in subsidies. “Green” technologies got help from the federal government too – in the form of tax breaks. But last week, the company said it was moving its manufacturing business to…China!"
