Former Six Flags executives buy Ocean Breeze Waterpark

VIRGINIA BEACH

Two former Six Flags amusement parks executives have purchased Ocean Breeze Waterpark, a landmark summer attraction near the Oceanfront, and plan multimillion-dollar improvements within the next several years.

The 19-acre site is fronted by Hugh Mongous, an enormous fake gorilla, and has 16 water slides, a million-gallon wave pool and Buccaneer Bay, a play area for children. The seasonal business employs about 350.

Kieran Burke, who purchased it with Gary Story, said the park will see improvements in the coming years. The new owners plan to develop state-of-the-art water rides, restaurants and guest amenities, he said.

"When we look at this park, others see that it's lacking or negative," Burke said. "But for us, that's opportunity."

Burke, co-owner of Ocean Breeze Holdings LLC, the new owner, wouldn't discuss the terms of the acquisition. The park was bought for about $7 million, according to city records, which identified OB Land LLC as the seller.

The park is assessed at about $6.3 million, city Real Estate Assessor Jerry Banagan said.

The new owners have lots of experience in the amusement park industry. Burke served as chairman and CEO and Story as president and chief operating officer at Six Flags for more than 10 years. In 2009, they bought Nashville Shores, a water park, marina and RV resort in Nashville, Tenn.

The next year, the men added a wave pool and a 1,000-foot-long lazy river. Burke said the company plans on making similar changes to Ocean Breeze.

There will be significant improvements this year and more in the next three to five years, he said.

Next month, Burke said, they expect to announce specific park projects.

He said they were impressed by Ocean Breeze's potential and location.

"We're very excited to be entering the Virginia Beach market," he said. "We think it's a great market in terms of the residential population and summer tourism."

Ocean Breeze officials don't disclose summer attendance figures. The facility is the only family water park in South Hampton Roads.

Pamela Lingle, communications manager at the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Ocean Breeze's expansion will help bring in more tourists.

"We think it's wonderful if someone can come in and do some product development," she said.

"Product development is an extremely important part of keeping people coming back year after year."

Va Beach is no fun for tourists

I have tried for several years to understand why anyone would ever want to come to Va Beach for a vacation or tourist destination. I have yet to be able to understand why anyone would come here. Boring. Crowded. Yawn.

Crowded

Your comment makes as much sense as Yogi Berra's quote: "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded."

About time

I worked there when I was 16 (21 years ago) and it hasn't changed a bit...nor been updated...

Let's keep it real...

Ocean Breeze is a DUMP! The bathrooms remind me of something you'd find at a run down camp ground. There's no where to change your clothes without getting them wet and the shower stalls are disgusting! Let's not forget the candy store that smells like mildew. The whole place is just run down. And the parking; unless you get there an hour before they open, you're walking what seems like a mile in summer heat to get to the entrance. They could sure use a tram. I hope the new owners make huge improvements. Oh, and the prices couldn't get any worse than Bush Gardens!

TRAM!!!!!

I agree about a tram. I thought that if a person just had a golf cart and charged a buck a person to shuttle folks to the font gate they'd make about 50 bucks an hour! I'm not a super lazy person, but try taking a 2 year old- with all the stuff they need for the day AND when they get tired of walking 2 minutes from the car and you end up carrying them too... Turns into quite a hike in the 90 degree heat. (Everything was fine once we got inside.) Honestly, THAT is why I haven't been back lately. If there was a shuttle, I would have had season passes ever since then...

Whoever burned the gorilla

Whoever burned the gorilla, please identify yourself. I am sure the statute of limitations has run out, and it would solve an eternal mystery for those of us growing up in 1980s Virginia Beach! Time to step out of the shadows...

Remember when?

The gorilla was set on fire? I think it was back in the 80s. I wish I could find the story online. I don't think they ever caught who did it?

I hope they plan something

I hope they plan something big, after all there isn't much to do on a VB Vacation.

People come

here on Vacation for the Beach. There isn't much to do for the people who live here everyday but for the people who come here to vacation its a hot spot! Think about it.....If you went on Vacation to the OBX what is there to do? Much less than what VA Beach has to offer. People vacation at the beach to enjoy the beach.
