Jury to reconvene Tuesday in Chesapeake murder trial

A jury went home Thursday evening without reaching a verdict in the Eric Spencer Baugher murder trial. The panel will return Tuesday to renew deliberations as courts are closed today and Monday.

Jurors spent almost four hours trying to decide whether Baugher, 36, of Norfolk was guilty of first- or second-degree murder in the Jan. 24 shooting death of Karen Kittell, 46; not guilty by reason of insanity; or not guilty at all.

In closing arguments, the prosecutor and chief defense lawyer laid out the options for the Circuit Court jury: Baugher was angry and intended to kill Kittell, with whom he had a relationship; her death was an accident during either sexual role-playing or as she threatened suicide – Baugher has given two scenarios; or he was insane and legally it doesn’t matter.
