More than 550 homeless people were served Wednesday at Scope during Norfolk's Project Homeless Connect, including at least 15 who left with new housing, city officials said.
The event, which offers services to homeless men and women from across the region, also gave them a chance to receive free medical and eye exams; help in obtaining ID cards, legal assistance and food stamps; and details about other services.
Norfolk offers Project Homeless Connect twice a year as part of its plan to help end homelessness within 10 years.
Nearly 500 volunteers worked Wednesday. This is the Navy's third year participating, exposing its dental practitioners from Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and the Truman and Eisenhower to complicated cases. One person had 24 teeth removed, organizers said.

Navy Dental Says No To Active Duty Dependents and Military
Retirees but provides Dental Services to the homeless? What am I missing?
So many homeless are
So many homeless are veterans. I would like to see more military involvement to ensure that the vets are receiving benefits that may be available to them that they are not using or may not be aware that they are entitled to.
Outstanding job and glad to
Outstanding job and glad to see the Navy jump on board and help out. Great this is what we need to take care of and this is money well spent. Things like this can have great beneficial outcomes and hopefully take some individuals off the street. This is also a life improvement/experience for all involved no matter what your status. I hope city council was present to work and greet the volunteers and recipients.
