Wet roads coupled with temperatures below freezing have the Virginia Department of Transportation warning motorists of icy road conditions.
VDOT and its contractors will continue to reapply sand and salt to major routes overnight, focusing on areas that will most likely refreeze, such as bridges, overpasses and ramps, a news release said. The below-freezing temperatures are expected to continue through the morning rush hour, so the National Weather Service is recommending that people give themselves more time to reach their destinations.
Several school districts announced delayed openings because of the icy road conditions.
Two-hour delays were announced for Isle of Wight County Schools in Virginia and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools, Hertford County Public Schools and Perquimans County Schools in North Carolina.
Perquimans County High School, which was scheduled for early release today because of its exam schedule, will now release students at 3 p.m.
Later today, it should be mostly sunny with a high near 38 degrees.
Cold air will return Thursday and Friday, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid- to upper 30s.
A small craft advisory is in effect for waters along the coast until 6 a.m. Thursday, with a gale warning in effect for waters farther off the coast.
Pilot writer Cindy Clayton and the 13News Weather Lab contributed to this report.

Enough with the salt and sand!
VDOT has put enough salt and sand to take us into next year's winter...whom do I send the bill to when my shiny new car begins to rust? VDOT needs to check how they do it up in the North...they use it sparingly and only when truly necessary...
can't win
More proof that VDOT can't win. Not enough salt and sand, too much salt and sand. Not enough plows, too many plows for this area. Not fast enough, put it down to soon.
And on and on....
