Caribbean rhythms will rock TCC stage

Posted to: Entertainment Music Norfolk

The Rhythm Project All Stars are teaming up with the Governor's School for the Arts Dance Department and African Drumming Ensemble for a night of Caribbean steelpan and calypso music.

"Rhythm Live!" will be at Tidewater Community College's Roper Performing Arts Center in Norfolk at 8 p.m. Saturday.

"I am very excited this year because it's the third year," said Sophia Subero, a Trinidad native and director of the Rhythm Project since 2007. "We are at a point where the kids are more used to performing at a professional level."

Twenty students from local high schools make up the All Stars group.

The hourlong show will also include dances choreographed by Janelle Spruill and Todd Rosenlieb. Subero, with help from associate director Dave Longfellow, will lead the music portion of the program.

"We use the dancers to portray carnival celebrations in Trinidad, which are very colorful, very lively dancing," she said of the fully staged production.
