Food drives, fundraisers for Beach 'Extreme Makeover' family

Posted to: Community News TV Virginia Beach

Work to build a new home for a Virginia Beach family has inspired fundraisers and food drives throughout Hampton Roads.

Today, Team Trademark, the building team for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project, will collect food and donations at the parking lot of Lynnhaven Mall between the AMC Theaters and Macy’s department store, off South Lynnhaven Road. The community is invited to bring nonperishable food for the Extreme Food Drive, donate $20 for an official Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Hampton Roads Build T-shirt ($15 for extra small children’s sizes) and be in a large group picture that will be shot from a Cox Communications bucket truck.

An Extreme Makeover celebrity designer or producer and radio personalities from 2WD, The Point, Z-104, 95.7R&B and Freedom 1650 will be at the mall site. Old Dominion University’s cheerleaders and band will also be in attendance.

Participants are also invited to walk past the home site. Virginia Beach police will provide security and crowd control.

Proceeds from the “Extreme March to Make a Difference” will support the critical build fund that pays for construction items that were not donated.

Official shirts are also available at designated retailers.

On Sunday, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is asking for volunteers to help clean up the neighborhood. The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barricades will be moved, signs taken down, the area swept and trash and construction debris picked up. Chanello's Pizza will provide lunch. RSVP on the Hampton Roads Facebook page or by calling Jenny at (757) 254-2436 with a head count of your group.

Check in at the front of the house, 3020 Gentry Road in Virginia Beach.
