Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Lifesaving cameras

RE 'RETHINKING red light cameras,' letters, Feb. 6: After reading our city treasurer's take on red-light cameras, I had to respond. I have one question for John Atkinson. How many lives would it take for him to approve of the cameras? For our family, one was enough.

You would think that part of his job as a city official is to uphold the laws of this state. He, better than anyone, should know how tight the budgets are and that the cameras are only helping to enforce those laws.

If one camera in Virginia Beach stops someone from running a red light and killing another person, it is well worth the cost.

The one thing about all of this that really bothers me is that once again, people who break the law are getting more consideration than those who obey it. Running a red light is breaking the law.

If someone had just obeyed the law, we would be celebrating my grandson's 12th birthday in three weeks, but it's not to be because stopping for a red light just wasn't convenient.
