More Virginians enroll in federal insurance plan

Posted to: Health News Virginia

Slightly more than 200 Virginians have enrolled in the federal health plan for people with pre-existing medical conditions, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

That's up from 75 enrollees in November, but far fewer than the 10,000 that state officials estimated would qualify.

The program, part of the national health care overhaul, is meant to provide coverage for people denied insurance or quoted extremely high rates because of pre-existing medical conditions.

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan started in the fall in most states and is scheduled to run until 2014, when the law will prohibit plans from excluding people for pre-existing conditions.

Beginning this year, the federal government included more plan options in the program, and some insurance carriers have volunteered to include information about it in their denial letters.

Nationally, enrollment in the plan has grown from 8,011 in November to 12,437 this month.

Its all political

Remember when the McDonnell administration said that they refused to post that projects were part of the "American Recovery Act" because the signs cost too much? So now that they don't want the healthcare plan to be successful they keep it "secret". Remember last year the blitz of ads for the poor to sign their kids up for FAMIS? Why aren't we seeing ads for this program too? The politicians forget that these programs are funded for US and not for their whims.

Every other industrialized nation in the world

Every other industrialized nation in the world has national healh insurance, and they pay HALF per capita what we pay for healthcare. The Germans have had it since 1886! I pray that one day America wakes up.

Paul Harvey and the rest of the story

Is Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) review done at every hospital around the world that has government funded health insurance?
Are the levels of malpractice suits similar per capita in every country around the world with government funded health insurance?
How much is a Big Mac (or other similar standard the is common) in the countries that have government funded health insurance?
Are the doctors in the countries around the world that have government funded health insurance at the same level of education and training as those in America?
How many per capita of DOCTORS in the countries that have government funded health insurance are educated and trained in THAT country?

Like opinion polls - the questions of the basis matter most.

The difference is this,

The difference is this, healthcare in Europe is a service. In the United States, healthcare is a business.

except for the fact you are wrong

Are you seriously saying that the doctors, nurses, lab techs, x-ray techs, pharmacists, and administrators work for the government in Europe?

Could you have meant the method of payment for the services of the health care PROVIDERS is from the taxation of the people of Europe?

What about legal services, if you want to sue someone, do the lawyers in Europe get paid by the government? And before you say it - there are ELECTIVE medical procedures and who pays for those in Europe? Do the movie stars get plastic surgery to enhance their appearance paid by the government?
In America we have the right to sue anyone for the amount of controversity is over $20. Doesn't Europe have something similar?

Doctors and such in Europe are a business.

hmm

My understanding is that Virginia decided not to open and run their own "high risk" pool and instead signed up to let the Federal Government run this plan. So if you are looking to find out why it is such a dismal failure then ask the Feds, after all they know best and can manage the whole of civilization from their Washington cubicles.

What has been said?

Where is the publicity on this? How many states are fighting anything to do with the health coverage plan? As was said, I haven't seen much on it in the VP. Could it be that the people charged with implementing it are wanting it to go away? Just questioning, if anyone has non-political answers. (Notice I said NON POLITICAL!)

media spin

The spin on this is "it's a good deal" as a taxpayer thathas done his homework regardless of what the media tells you, this is bad all around. Do your own homework and read the bill!

Right wing rulebook: rule #3

When you don't like the facts, attack the media.

When you're broke

When you are broke you probably can't even afford this healthcare. And most of the people in this situation are broke.
