Striped bass season to reopen to trawlers in N.C.

PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C.

North Carolina fisheries officials voted 6-2 Friday to reopen the striped bass season to commercial trawlers despite opposition from anglers and environmental groups. North Carolina Marine Fisheries Division Director Louis Daniel has not yet decided when to reopen the season.

Controversy over commercial trawling practices erupted last month, when a video - shot off the Outer Banks coastline near Nags Head - landed on YouTube showing hundreds of dead fish floating in the ocean.

Opponents of the practice say too many fish are killed and discarded in the process. The fishery will reopen in one-day increments until the state's striped bass quota has been reached.
