NORFOLK

Tidewater Community College annually recognizes three South Hampton Roads residents who exemplify the life achievements of Martin Luther King Jr.

The 2011 award recipients are Edith G. White, president and chief officer of the Urban League of Hampton Roads; Emanuel Chestnut, counselor, Veterans Affairs for the TCC Virginia Beach campus; and TCC student Wendy Sullivan.

White has served as president and CEO of the Urban League for the past decade, where under her leadership new programs have been developed to enhance educational opportunities, provide technical assistance for business development and create wealth through home ownership.

Navy veteran Chestnut is an advocate for veterans who seek to improve their lives by continuing their education.

Sullivan, the mother of two grown children, began taking classes at TCC alongside her daughter. Inspired by passages written by King from his jail cell in Alabama, she changed her life’s focus to find ways to give back to the community. Sullivan is a fund raiser for Help and Emergency Response (HER shelter), organized an Angel Tree through her church and fund raises for a family in need through TCC’s Wildfire Club.

The recipients were honored at a ceremony at the college last Friday.
