History of Bodie lighthouses revealed in exhibit

Posted to: News North Carolina

MANTEO, N.C.

There have been three Bodie Island Lighthouses on the North Carolina coast, and the history behind each of them is revealed in an exhibit.

"The Lighthouses at Bodie Island: Third Time's The Charm" is being presented by the Friends of the Outer Banks History Center and the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society for the opening reception today.

Part of the reception includes an offering of biscuits, beans and Hatteras-style chowder, basic fare for a lighthouse keeper.

The exhibit explains how the first Bodie Island Lighthouse sank on one side due to a poor foundation and the loss of the second tower because of Confederate troops during the Civil War.

Recent restoration work on the ironwork, stairs and windows will also be highlighted, along with reports on the project's progress.
