PETA wants 'Fishing Hurts' rest stop in Troutville

RICHMOND

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced an initiative last week that would allow for sponsorships at Virginia's highway rest areas to help offset the cost of operating the facilities.

Now People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants in on the action. PETA has sent a letter to the Virginia Department of Transportation expressing interest in sponsoring the Interstate 81 rest stop in Troutville and renaming it the "Fishing Hurts" rest area. It also would like to get a reduced sponsorship rate as a nonprofit.

And forget about that junk food in the vending machines. The "Fishing Hurts" rest area would have "delicious vegan faux-fish sticks" and other fish-free snacks, according to PETA's letter.

For the kids, there would be Sammy the Sea Kitten toys, "which would teach children to have empathy for fish by comparing them to the kittens whom many of us are more familiar with," the letter says.

PETA's letter
Here’s the text of the letter the group has sent to VDOT:

I am writing on behalf of Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 2 million members and supporters—including thousands across our home state—to inform you of PETA’s interest in sponsoring the Troutville Safety Rest Area and re-naming it the “Fishing Hurts” Rest Area.
Once upon a time, no one thought twice about fishing, but nowadays, given the research into fish sentience and their ability to feel pain, fishing can only be considered a blood sport that causes significant physical and psychological suffering. People who fish recreationally might be surprised to learn that the journal Fish and Fisheries cited more than 500 research papers on fish intelligence and concluded that fish are smart animals with sophisticated social structures.
Perhaps it is because of awareness of this kind of information that a bill was introduced into the legislature establishing the “right” to fish, although legal scholars believe that law is unconstitutional. Fish have extremely sensitive mouths and lips that they use in much the same way that we use our fingers.

Clearly, fish suffer when impaled with a metal hook and dragged into an environment in which they can’t breathe and are forced to gasp frantically. Dr. Donald Broom, scientific advisor to the British government, has said, “The scientific literature is quite clear. Anatomically, physiologically, and biologically, the pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals.”

PETA’s “Fishing Hurts” Rest Area in Troutville would feature displays about fish intelligence, the pain caused by fishing, and the harm done to water birds and other aquatic life who become entangled in fishing line and ingest lost and discarded bobs and hooks. Our vending machines would dispense plush Sammy the Sea Kitten toys, which would teach children to have empathy for fish by comparing them to the kittens whom many of us are more familiar with. We would also consider stocking the vending machines with delicious vegan faux-fish sticks (made of healthy plant protein and spices) and other healthy fish-free snacks.
Allowing us to rename the Troutville facility the “Fishing Hurts” Rest Area would send a clear message that all violence is unacceptable, even when it is directed at those who are different from us. Would the Department of Transportation consider a reduced nonprofit rate for the annual rights fee required to sponsor a rest stop? . . . Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President

Yummy!

It's good to be one of the animals at the top of the food chain!

"Feed the children"

Ah, yes. Give a man a fish and he feeds his family for a day. Teach a man to fish and he risks having scantily-clad PETA directors camping on his doorstep, wearing blood-spattered furs (I know, those contradict each other) while handing out fliers to passers-by. and to make things worse, they want a discount! " It also would like to get a reduced sponsorship rate as a nonprofit." Just what we need to entice tourists to revisit Va.

Pain is Pain

If you support allowing a person to put a hook in the water for a fish to swallow so that he can snatch it, and reel in the fish against its will then you should support dog fighting too. People don't realize it but deer feel pain when they're shot and fish feel pain when they are hooked. By the way don't forget the live seafood we put in the boiling water for our on delight.

Living things feel pain

NO... WAY... I had no idea. You have opened my eyes with your extreme insight. I totally agree, we should allow people to FISH for dogs and cats too. Why not? People eat them too and there ARE way too many of them, ask any shelter! You people yourselves say there are too many! Well we can fish for em and eat em and problem solved!! And it would be so much easier as you can see the dog or cat right there! Not like fishing where you just hope there is a fish under there. How about fishing for birds? Sea Gulls are a nusiance here anyway right? Take a pole and hook and let fly with french fries as bait! OMG.. Your wisdom is going to make me millions on this fishing deal... THANK YOU SIR!

Kill them all

Shoot them, skin them and barbecue them. I could care less about a dog, cat, fish or bird. To me they are all equally worthless. I am just amazed at how people justify killing one over the other

Better yet,

Canada geese are plentiful, and much easier to catch!

my new duty

this weekend i am going to read the PETA letter to some ospreys and some blue herons so they know what they are doing to those poor little fish. Maybe i can turn those birds on to some tofu and bread crums instead, just kidding. PETA , too bad you cant be more mature and realistic in your cause, you really give me a lot to laugh at.
See you on the bay, i here the flounders are moving in, use a live bull minnow with a slice of squid on a flounder rig while slowley drifting along the shoals a a channel, make sure you stay on the bottom and dont set the hook too soon or too hard.

you're chiding PETA fornot

you're chiding PETA fornot being mature and realistic? really? lol

peta

PETA, I think would be good if the people running it weren't idiots.

I have Ignored Peta

...since they became an organization (of what...morons? you tell me)No one is going to tell me what I can eat. If it's sold in the local supermarket and my money is paying for it I'll eat it, case closed. The PETA folks need to get over themselves.
