Defense Department previews shutdown's effect on military

Posted to: Federal Government Military News Politics

The military is considered an "essential" service that will keep operating in the event of a government shutdown, but that doesn't mean it's completely immune.

In a message Thursday, Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn gave more details on how a shutdown would affect pay, benefits and military services.

The military will continue activities related to national security, including operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan and Libya. Medical facilities will provide inpatient and essential outpatient care and emergency dental care. Mess halls, child care and Defense Department schools will remain open. Some legal assistance and financial management activities will continue.

Other activities "will need to be shut down in an orderly fashion," Lynn said, adding that he'll issue more detailed guidance about that.

Military personnel aren't subject to furlough and must report for duty as normal. Reservists should refer to the DoD Contingency Guidance document and to their chain of command for more information.

If the shutdown does begin on Saturday, all civilian personnel should report to work on their next scheduled day at the normal time to receive more instructions, Lynn said. Their supervisors will brief them today about their status during a furlough.

Defense contractors will continue working and will be paid if their contracts were funded prior to the shutdown. They also should report to work as normal to be briefed on their status.

Service members and civilians required to work during the shutdown will be paid later. Those who are furloughed will only be paid if Congress approves.

Military retirees should continue to receive their benefits without interruption.

More information is available from the Office of Personnel Management.

It's Bush's fault!

I have never seen such hype and BS in my life. With a Democrat as President for more than two years and Democrats controlling the Senate this has to be the Republicans fault - right??? And Bush, who hasn't been President for over two years is still being blamed. Get real! Pull your head out of... the sand.

now that JFCOM is closing

Now that JFCOM is closing--there will be a lot less contractors come the end of the fiscal year.

OMG!

Thank goodness for the lowly contractors. If it wasn't for them we would be in real trouble.

Reagan and Bush created 93% of the National Debt

Reagan and Bush created 93% of the National Debt with the mythology that cutting taxes for the rich was good for the economy. Read what Reagan's own budget director said about this. Google "David Stockman", and go to reaganbushdebt.org.

reaganbushdebt.org

By all means go there. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence understands that web site is so dishonest it would make Tommy Flanagan proud.

Clearing up Military Pay

Its true.. the military will only receive a one week pay check... Leave and Earning Statements are out on Mypay and reflect exactly one weeks pay.

As for day cares.... since the military still has to work, do any of you really think that by closing the daycares will help the servicmember who is already stressed out enough by only getting a one week paycheck that has to cover not only those day care costs, but put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads? Its the same for those who wont get a paycheck... they still have bills to pay regardless of what our congress wants to do. I guess we all should be happy that we have jobs to go back to once this is over with.

Republican attack on women's health clinics

Is there no evil the Republican Party won't inflict on the American people? Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and seven other Democratic women Senators said they have drawn a line in the sand over funding for poor women's health -- not just Planned Parenthood but 4,500 women's health clinics -- in the budget showdown with Republicans. They said spending numbers are resolved and that the whole fight has come down a standoff over women's health.

Feinstein spoke in language she seldom uses: "The numbers are agreed to," she said. "This is nothing more than an opportunity for the right wing in the House to sock it to women."

Venom

That is today’s talking point. I heard Reid say about the same thing. Clearly just words to enflame the uneducated or unthinking masses and make zero progress in getting concessions from the other side. A thinking person should ask themselves why any Republicans would want to “sock it to women”. I’m a Republican and I’m rather partial to them and I doubt if I’m alone.

A bill rider is not a talking point

A bill rider is not a talking point. If the bill passes, then the rider becomes law. Nice try, though.

It has worked

People like Chris33 are the target of these ridiculous comments, and he took it all in, 100% and is now regurgitating it almost as if he was being paid to do so.

It's a real shame, but it is comforting to know that eventually, if Chris33 keeps being involved, and continues to pay attention, he will see the lies and propaganda for what it is.
