Documentary on gun violence touches on Tech tragedy

Posted to: Entertainment Movies Norfolk Spotlight

Agree with him or not, Colin Goddard is hard to dismiss.

Tall. Chiseled. Well-spoken. And shot four times by a psychotic gunman at Virginia Tech.

Some survivors of the rampage focused on forgetting. Goddard decided to let April 16, 2007, determine his course. He became a voice for the 32 who died, and a poster boy for the push to tighten gun laws.

"Every time something like this happens," Goddard said, "everyone says, 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.' That's it. That's the extent that people get involved. I don't see why we're surprised when another one happens, because we have done nothing to make it not happen since the last one."

Goddard, now working for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, insists he's not a "gun-banner."

"This is about putting guns in the hands of the right people," he said, "while making sure they don't go to the wrong ones."

In "Living for 32," his 40-minute documentary, Goddard demonstrates just how easy it is for anyone to buy a firearm at a gun show. The film, which screens Wednesday at the Naro Expanded Cinema in Norfolk, started as a five-minute video that mushroomed when he decided to use a hidden camera at shows in Virginia, Ohio, Minnesota and Texas.

With the help of a few friends, more than a dozen firearms were purchased at the shows - handguns, shotguns, an AK-47 and assorted other assault-style weapons - with no one checking to see whether the buyers were felons, fugitives or had been certified as dangerously mentally ill.

The guns were bought from unlicensed sellers - "collectors" allowed to rent tables at the shows or individuals who walk around with their own guns for sale.

In 33 states, including Virginia, buyers must submit to background checks only if they're purchasing a firearm from a licensed dealer. "It's all legal," Goddard said, "but should it be?"

He thinks every gun sale should require a check - a requirement he views as "reasonable." It has made him a target for the gun-rights camp, the folks who see any new restriction as another step toward what they fear will eventually be an outright ban.

Goddard said that when he first took a stance, "everything seemed so simple, like it's all common sense. But in reality, there's so much more to this whole thing than you ever thought. The depth and the history of it all - the emotions."

He's been yelled at and called names by people who have never faced the business end of a gun, much less been shot. "It can be hard to control my own feelings. I try to come off as reasonable, try to keep it toned down. But when I get home sometimes, it feels like I've been beating my head against the wall all day long."

It's not always that way. Goddard has testified before Congress and sat down with Oprah Winfrey. "Living for 32" was among only a half dozen or so documentaries selected for screening at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Goddard knows it's impossible to stop all the bad guys from getting guns.

"But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. To throw your hands up in the air and say there's nothing we can do about it is ridiculous - a call for anarchy. We can make this legitimate without taking your gun away."

Cho didn't buy his guns from a gun show ...

Cho didn't buy his guns from a gun show, so restrictions on individuals selling their guns wouldn't have kept them out of Cho's hands. Cho purchased his guns from retail outlets.

Puff piece

Gee, I wonder how gun owners can get a one-sided promotion like this from the Pilot for our agenda? Last week VCDL had a speaker from South Africa who saved countless lives in a church attacked by terrorists in 1993 because he was armed with a revolver, for example.

One good puff piece deserves another...

Did you send a press release?

Did you send a press release to the pilot, announcing the speaker? The only way they know is if the organizers tell them. And then the may cover it, may not, depending on schedule for that day. Either way, they have a free community board that you can post things.

The Pilot..

wouldn't cover it whether they sent out an invitation or announcement. The story doesn't fit their liberal agenda.

Gun Control

Another knee jerk reaction. Every time some kind of shooting event makes the news another bunch of people who know little or nothing about guns jump out of the closet and start yelling about banning guns. I was raised around guns all my life and was taught as a child how to respect them. In my opinion it is every citizens right in this country to own firearms and the last thing we need is a bunch of do gooders with little or no knowledge of them trying to ban them.
People kill people not guns. Banning them will do nothing to stop violent behavior. If someone wants to harm another they do not have to have a gun to do it. Wake up American and stop this abuse of our rights. Gun ownership it one of the basic rights of this country. Let's keep it that wa

Living For 32 and Colin Goddard

The people of Blacksburg Virginia, and Va Tech alumni are VERY PROUD of the work Colin is doing to raise awareness on the issue of gun shows and the lack of proper screening there. As our legislators promised us stricter gun laws here in Virginia after the tragic events on Apr. 17th 2007, they turned their backs on us and now allow carry concealed weapons in bars. This is a disgrace! The Brady Bill, backed by a Republican, Ronald Reagan has been blocked by the gun lobby for too long. I applaud the work that Colin is doing in a world where people are obsessed with guns. We need more brave people like him to speak up for those that no longer have a voice.

Where is the coverage for Lila Rose

and her expose of Planned Parenthood? Why doesn't she get a screening at the Naro? (which itself got hundreds of taxpayer dollars a few years ago) Why doesn't the Pilot write a similiar touching story about Abby Johnson who writes about her time in Planned Parenthood?

Sounds like

Sounds like she needs a better publisist to work with the Naro for the screening. Then it will be a local news screening that she would need to send a press release to the pilot about. Then maybe it will get covered. That's the way these things work.

Oh really?

"Goddard, now working for the 'Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence', insists he's not a gun-banner."

Oh really?

Handgun Control, Inc.'s nutty "Brady II" bill would have banned as a "Saturday Night Special" any gun whose barrel and grip combined did not measure more than 10 inches.

My Glock 19, with a four inch barrel and a five inch grip.....one of the premier pistols used by law enforcement, would have been BANNED as a "Saturday Night Special".

If he works with the Brady Campaign, he is nothing more than a pawn in chess game being played by the Brady people, whose ultimate objective is eventually banning the ownership of virtually all pistols, rifles and shotguns.

They won't admit to it now....but that's their ultimate goal.

Chicken little ... the sky is falling

Wanting simple background checks to weed out convicted felons who have been in and out of mental institutions from buying guns at the Scope and other shows equals wanting to overturn the 2nd Amendment and ban all guns for everyone. Hmmmm, can we all say exaggerate much when you don't have a logical argument against a common sense closing a giant loophole.
