Rep. Randy Forbes seeks one-time shot to perform nuptials

Randy Forbes serves many roles: husband, father, lawyer, United States congressman representing Virginia’s 4th District. For one day in June, he’ll add another: wedding officiant.

Forbes has applied for permission to perform a civil marriage ceremony under one of Virginia’s perhaps lesser-known laws. The state’s Circuit Court judges may grant such one-time authority to nonclergy who live in the jurisdiction, who aren’t felons, and who post a $500 bond.

With the authority comes permission to charge a fee of up to $50 plus travel expenses. Any resident judge, active or retired, also may perform weddings, and they don’t have to post bonds.

Such requests from lay people don’t happen often, Chesapeake Circuit Court Clerk Faye Mitchell said. Until this past year, those interested would send requests directly to the judges, she said. Now there is a formal application process – the form is available online at tinyurl.com/3pxfjko – with an $84 fee.

The bond, returned after the wedding, is to ensure the would-be officiants know the legal requirements for completing and filing marriage licenses, Mitchell said. “It just kind of weeds out all the not-so-serious people,” she said.

Virginia is indeed serious about its weddings: Performing one without a license or the court’s OK will land you a mandatory jail term of up to a year, plus a fine of up to $500. A Forbes spokesman in Washington said the congressman was asked to perform the marriage ceremony for a nephew.

So what

How about giving some press as to the fact that the food banks are running dry or law makers trying to take Medicare away from anyone born after 1958 OR that there is no housing for the indigent OR.......

This is newsworthy because by performing a civil wedding

Mr. Forbes is undermining one of the pillars of his posturing against same-sex marriage. He is tacitly admitting what everyone with any sense already knows - that marriage as sanctioned by the state (legal contract) and marriage as sanctioned by God (sacrament) are called the same thing but are entirely different. Your church can forbid its sacraments to same-sex couples or forbid divorce but the state should not withhold the legal benefits of marriage (contract) based on discrimination and does allow contracts to end.

Who cares?

Really? Who cares? We are now in 3 wars, the economy is in the tank, the dollar is in a free fall, gas is skyrocketing and this is an issue how?

Why is this even news?

Come on Pilot, you can do better than this. Give us the real news or we will find other local sources.

Lesser-known law

A holdover from the days when the Church ruled the commonwealth, and which probably should have been repealed years ago. Of course, it keeps a tight fist on who can marry whom, so I guess it serves some useful purpose. The way I read it, since it allows for an atheist ceremony, which is repugnant to our religion-oriented legislature, it should also apply to same sex marriages.

Do it!

Do the wedding Randy! THEN, come back and do your job! Or maybe this means that you will pursue another calling!!!!

Interesting coincidence. On

Interesting coincidence. On April 16th I presided over the marriage of a niece from Ohio at a wedding in Aspen, Colorado. In Colorado as soon as you sign the marriage license you are married. To the Government it is a contract not a ceremony. You can have anyone you want perform any kind of ceremony you like. Even an un-ordained person like me. We did the standard Christian vows, read from ‘The Prophet’ and some things we made up. I guess if I did the ceremony in Virginia it would cost me $500.00 and maybe a year in prison.

Randy Forbes

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today,........"

Congratulations to the family member who gets a sitting congressman to perform his wedding.

I am not aligned with Forbes philosophy and legislative actions.

It's family though.

Give the man some space on this issue.

Don't you think

Don't you think the bond between a nephew and his uncle is more significant than that of a congressman and citizen? Don't be so cynical!
