CHINCOTEAGUE

Two brothers died and two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Va. 175 on the Chincoteague Causeway on Monday afternoon.

About 5:15 p.m., a 2004 Volvo was traveling west on Va. 175 when it swerved into the eastbound lanes and struck a 1995 Ford Taurus, a Virginia State Police news release said. Two passengers in the Taurus died at the scene. They were identified as brothers Robert Cherrix, 67, of Chincoteague and Laurence Gordon Cherrix, 62, of New Church.

The driver of the Taurus, Christina Gallagher, 47, of Chincoteague, like her passengers, was not wearing her seat belt. She was flown to a hospital with major injuries.

The driver of the Volvo, Ivan Klychnik, 63, of California also was seriously injured and flown to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators have determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but the investigation continues.
