First piping plover hatches on Hatteras seashore

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.

The first piping plover chick of the season has hatched on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the National Park Service announced today. Its nest is on the east side of Cape Point.

To protect the rare shorebirds, park Supt. Mike Murray has temporarily closed the area to pedestrians and vehicles. The closure extends from Ramp 44 to Cape Point.

Earlier this month park officials said in a news release that nine active piping plover nests had been observed on the seashore, five of them at Cape Point.
