Cape Henry's girls lacrosse team had the momentum heading into the second half of Saturday's VISAA Division II state title game.
Regan Haegley had just scored two goals in the final 1:44 of the first half to trim the Dolphins' deficit against St. Anne's-Belfield to 8-5 at Powhatan Field.
That's when Saints senior Addi Bolin took over. Bolin scored three goals in the first 3:14 of the second half, and the Saints rolled to a 19-6 win and their third straight state championship.
"I felt like we got momentum before the half," said Cape Henry senior Ashmore Standing, who scored four goals. "And I feel like the half killed our momentum a little bit. We came out a little flat, and they didn't."
Lila Satterfield scored four goals for the Saints, and Trent Holden scored three.
But mostly it was Bolin who riddled the Dolphins.
Bolin, who will continue her career at George Washington, finished with nine goals and four assists. Almost all her goals came at key points.
Bolin put the Saints up 3-2 - their first lead - with a goal 4:30 into the game.
Another goal 10:34 before the half pushed the lead to 6-3 and squashed Cape Henry's momentum from a goal by Standing minutes earlier.
Then came Bolin's three quick scores after the half, which deflated the Dolphins.
"We can usually put teams away early in the second half if we stay focused," Bolin said. "The first five minutes or so, we kind of crushed their spirits."
Though frustrated by the loss, Cape Henry coach Brooke Hummel was able to take many positives from the season.
The first-year coach led a team with one senior - Standing, who will play at Old Dominion - from 5-15 in 2010 to 15-5 in 2011.
"If you can't look at that as a victory in and of itself, you're not looking at the right things," Hummel said. "We grew in every aspect of the game."
For that reason, Hummel is already looking forward to next season.
"I fully expect to be back in this game next year," she said. "But with a different outcome."
