Virginia Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security Terrie L. Suit will be the keynote speaker at Tidewater Community College’s commencement at 7 p.m. May 13 at the Constant Center.

More than 1,600 students are candidates for associate's degrees, certificates or diplomas at the 52nd graduation exercises.

The former Chesapeake delegate, appointed by Gov. Bob McDonnell in January 2010 as assistant to the governor for commonwealth preparedness, is also Virginia's homeland security advisor and the direct liaison between the governor and the federal Department of Homeland Security.

Suit spent nearly a decade representing the citizens of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. During that time she chaired both the General Laws Committee and the Virginia Housing Commission.

Suit holds an associate's degree from TCC and a bachelor's in political science from Old Dominion.

In addition to the commencement address, TCC’s celebration includes remarks by student speaker Kathryn Funk of Portsmouth, who has earned her associate's degree in nursing with plans to attend Old Dominion.

Graduation will be streamlined live at www.tcc.edu.
