Long-awaited student center at TCC has 'wow' factor

Posted to: Education News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Brenda Boone dropped in for breakfast at Einstein Bros. Bagels at Tidewater Community College's new Norfolk Student Center on Wednesday morning. That afternoon, she was back for a turkey sub, lemonade and chips at The Campus Cafe.

"I'll spend all my money over here," Boone told TCC President Deborah M. DiCroce, who was leading a tour of the curving brick, glass and metal building at 310 Granby St.

Boone, an adjunct professor, and the public got a peek inside the 55,000-square-foot, five-story downtown facility last week during a soft opening. Today, the start of TCC's summer semester, will mark the official opening of the $17.6 million center, paid for with student fees and $712,000 from the city.

The first floor and its eateries are open to the public, who along with students can lounge in chairs and log on to free Wi-Fi. The other floors are a haven for students, who weighed in on what they wanted to see. Many asked for study rooms. They got them throughout the building, in addition to other features.

"Wow," a student exclaimed as she stepped off an elevator into a shock of natural light, filtering in through large glass panes.

"That's what we keep hearing - 'wow,' " DiCroce said.

The student center is the first of its kind in Virginia for a community college, TCC officials said.

It's also the first of four student centers on TCC's campuses. The others will range from 57,000 to 89,500 square feet and are set to open by January 2013 in Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. The combined cost of the four centers is projected at about $83 million. Student fees and a likely contribution from localities will fund the other three projects, TCC spokeswoman Laurie White said.

DiCroce said the idea for the centers came from students: "'We don't have a place to meet,' they said. 'Help!'"

Over the past 10 years, TCC's enrollment has grown by at least 51 percent, with about 46,000 students enrolled during the 2010-11 school year, White said.

"With many hours spent daily focusing on their education on campus, they need and expect appropriate student space and services," according to a fact sheet TCC created on the student center.

The center, the fact sheet says, is also "one of few at community colleges in the nation offering comprehensive student amenities."

The free Wi-Fi available to the public on the first floor is available throughout the building.

Other features include a basketball court; a fitness area with flat-screen TVs, treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights and weight-resistance machines; game consoles with furniture to chill in; computer kiosks to check email; an event space; and a room to work on iPads and Macs provided in the center.

"We're trying to bridge the digital divide in part by age and in part by socioeconomics," DiCroce said.

What's more, TCC students will now, for a fee, be able to drop their children off at a minding service while they are in class. And student groups, like the Student Government Association, will have their own dedicated space.

Coby Dillard, the Norfolk SGA's president, recalled the days the group had to scramble to find an available room.

"It makes life a lot easier," Dillard said of the center.

This is Great.

This is a wonderful addition to downtown and will help further revitalize it. The only thing downtown needs now are stores like Target, Best Buy, or an Office Max for everday supplies so people don't have to drive all the way to Janaf or the beach.

Student Center

This new building is amazing. As a TCC student at the Virginia Beach campus, now I'm even more jealous of those at the Norfolk campus. Too bad VB's will not be finished until after I graduate :/

VA is for Haters

I'm starting to believe my hometown is full of haters. It seems like every comment I read on any article is full of negativity. Why can't people look at the positive aspect of things? I pay hefty taxes, but I also get paid off of taxes, and I also VOTE. We all have the same issues but everyone acts like their tax dollars is the only thing paying for anything like no one else pays taxes. People enjoy the good things and get positive. The people in my home of Hampton Roads have driven me to Phoenix because we never want anything there and complain about everything we do get. Let the TCC kids enjoy an expensive building. For those of you that seem to hate everything, somebody hates you. Kill yourself if this world makes you so sick!

Wow!

That was super-expensive.

A Student's Perspective

Couple things:

Our campus is in the middle of downtown Norfolk. A lot of students rely on HRT to get there, and are there for most of the day between classes. The Student Center gives us a place where-in addition to studying (the entire 2nd floor is set aside as a study space)-we can relax, work out, and enjoy ourselves during down time.

Not only is the Center a source of pride, it helps to enhance the image of the Norfolk Campus and that of the downtown community. While other construction projects-Granby Tower and the Westin project on Plume St. as examples-are empty lots, our Center is open, functional, and will be a success.

Before you rush to call our Center "unnecessary," come see it-and how we're already benefiting from it.

Maybe we should just throw

Maybe we should just throw more books at students? Maybe TCC should build a little red schoolhouse out back for the people who feel our educational system is spot on.

For those that are uninformed, or too lazy to do research, go ahead and see where our educational system ranks among industrialized nations.

Who should Pay!!....Seriously

Are you Kidding? I thought I was clear that I don't think anyone should pay. This high cost student center is a $17.6 million dollar waste. Community Colleges Should be utilizing available funds to improve Teachers, Books and Direct Classroom expenditures that will help improve the education of as many community members as possible for as low a cost as possible. The cost of providing necessary study space is far far less than $17.6 Million Dollars. I don't begruge students having a nice enviroment for getting an education but I don't want to pay for a Country club level building to give everyone a warm fuzzy. I worked hard for my money and I went thru the Tidewater Community college system. Made it just fine without Fancy student centers.

Obviously everyone who has

Obviously everyone who has graduated from there up until now has made it. I think that goes without saying. Having said, why do you feel they need more books, teachers, classroom expenditures, etc. if you made it fine?

Did you ever think maybe there are others who may need assistance outside the classroom? Maybe others would like to use the weightroom? Maybe others want to play basketball? Maybe others would like to patronize the eateries on the first floor(it is open to public as well). Maybe others just want to socialize with their peers? Maybe they want to use the WIFI?

How disaapointing to read the negative comments

This is a wonderful addition to the TCC Norfolk campus and benefits will flow from the college to the students to the community for years to come. The opportunities which are now available to TCC students because of this building will produce better students who will become better citizens. As four year campuses become more and more expensive, the role of the community college will continue to grow. Making that experience a better one can only help society at large.
