Posted to: News Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH
Daniel W. Gilmore, 24, of the 3900 block of Deep Creek Blvd., was identified by police as the motorcyclist killed in a collision with a vehicle at Portsmouth Boulevard and Des Moines Avenue earlier this month.

The driver of the vehicle was trying to turn left onto Portsmouth Boulevard when the eastbound motorcycle entered the intersection and the two collided, according to police.

Gilmore was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and died there. Police said the driver of the vehicle had injuries that did not seem to be life-threatening.

No mention of fault

There was no mention of which vehicle was at fault. My prayers go out to the young man's family. Remember folks, a motorcycle must obey all traffic laws as well. I've seen them cut between traffic during back ups, take the shoulder on the interstate, and squeeze between cars into businesses. So until charges are filed, din't assume it was the auto's fault.

There is a stop sign on Des

There is a stop sign on Des Moines, coming onto Portsmouth Blvd. Only the unnamed vehicle had the stop sign. Traveling down Portsmouth Blvd has no stop between Effingham and Frederick.

My thoughts

and prayers go out to the family of both. Since the article never mentioned any fault, or any police statement, I will reserve judgement. I think it would serve us all well to do the same. Remember, there is more that one life involved here.

Blinders on when it comes to motorcyclists

They all say, "I didn't see him." What an excuse. If you're in a car, pay attention. Drive only - stop trying to do other things. My son was nearly killed when a driver pulled across the road (left hand turn) to go into a 7Eleven. He ended up with two full leg casts and a cast on his right arm. He missed hitting a light poll by inches. Missed getting a basketball scholarship because of this. The guy had no drivers license on him and no insurance. He only got a slap on the hand. Maybe stiffer penalties would help - don't you think!!!

Sad

Thoughts and prayers to the Gilmore family.

If a collision is eminent, going over the obstacle when possible is much safer than a sudden stop. Stay alert fellow bikers, could be today.

Why...

...wasn't the driver of the vehicle identified? That person KILLED someone, was he or she even charged?? Or is it OK to Kill A Biker??? These distracted cage drivers are the reason we stopped riding our motorcycle a few years ago!!! We've lost too many good friends...

oops. I lost him in the reflection of my Ipad

They should only let Motor Cops respond to this type of "accident".

Sorry...

I didn't see him while I was texting, reading the newspaper, putting on my makeup, and drinking a cup of triple cappuchino machiato. Its not easy you know to do all of that while being distrcacted by having to control my car. Give me my $25 failure to yield citation so I can get on with my busy important life.

I have a solution

Kill a biker, Go to Jail!
