Norfolk plans public hearing on ward, superward boundaries

Posted to: Local Government News Norfolk

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect meeting time. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m.

NORFOLK

The City Council will hold a public hearing next week to get input on changing the boundaries of the city’s wards and superwards.

The hearing is set for 6 p.m. next Tuesday at Granby High School, 7101 Granby St., a city news release says.

Wards 1, 5, 6 and 7 deviate from the ideal population figures and need to be reduced, the release says, because the population of each ward and superward is required to be “as equal as practicable."

Residents who attend the meeting will be able to view maps and related material, along with options to change the ward and superward boundaries.

For more information, visit the city’s website at www.norfolk.gov/redistricting/.

Anyone who needs special assistance can call the city clerk at (757) 664-4253.

Take advantage of the public input session

Norfolk city council actually discussed NOT holding a public hearing on the proposed ward redistricting during informal session two weeks ago. Mayor Fraim wanted to just put it to a council vote. No public input or information. But alas, the new councilpersons weren't having any of it.

That's a win for the Norfolk citizen, finally. The city council is letting you give feedback in this vital process. Don't let this opportunity pass you up if you care about your vote.

Now that there are at least THREE different plans floating around, we might get a good one.
