A 23-year-old Virginia Beach man who died from a gunshot wound after being dropped off at a fire station late Wednesday had been attempting an armed home-invasion robbery when he was shot, police said.
One of the residents of a home in the 300 block of Rose Marie Ave., in the Aragona section, shot Shawn Thomas Ross, said Officer Adam Bern-stein, a police spokesman.
Police have interviewed the shooter and aren't filing charges at this time, he said. Ross had been carrying a handgun, he said.
"It does not appear to be random, but the relationship between the residents of the home and shooting victim is unclear," Bernstein said.
Police won't release the name of the shooter, who legally possessed a gun, unless the person is charged, he said.
Someone who police believe was an acquaintance of Ross took the wounded man to the fire station at 3608 South Plaza Trail at about 11:30 p.m., Bernstein said.
Ross, of the 5100 block of Settlers Park Drive, was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.
The case remains under investigation.
