Some days, the rights and privileges that distinguish the American way of life seem so natural, so inherently protected and guaranteed, that it's easy to forget how much was sacrificed to preserve and protect them.
Throughout this nation's history, men and women of all ages and backgrounds have stepped up and sworn to defend this country and everything for which it stands. They've endured long stints away from home, faced hostile enemies in foreign lands, suffered wounds that never fully heal.
Many have given everything.
In the past decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, more than 6,000 service members have made that ultimate sacrifice. More than 100, including 15 in the past year, had ties to the cities, towns and neighborhoods of Hampton Roads.
On this Memorial Day, as we pause to reflect on those sacrifices, we honor the heroes who have given their all in defense of this country and its ideals.
