VIRGINIA BEACH
Swim trunks on, paintbrush in hand, Bob Langston stood on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk on Sunday and regarded the ocean.
Out on their boards, competitive surfers zoomed down crests of seawater. Langston painted a wide swath of bright blue on his canvas and captured a surfer catching the first waves of summer.
“I’m a surfer, too, so it’s like my whole element,” Langston said of the Surf Art Expo, where he and about 45 other artists showcased their hang-ten-inspired art.
“It’s what I love to do, you know?” he said.
About 235 surfers from across the country flocked this weekend to the eighth annual Steel Pier Classic, a surfing competition that honors the Beach’s original steel pier surfing spot and officially kicks off the season. It continues today between 1st and 5th streets.
The event is about more than just catching a good wave, said Mary Knight, president of the Virginia Longboard Federation.
That’s why, behind the surfers, artists are invited to showcase their work.
“That’s what this whole weekend is about: the art of surfing,” she said.
Down on the beach, Virginia Beach high school students are showing and selling their art, too. The collection comes from 10 high schools and includes a life-size papier-mâché mermaid, a crab sculpture made of seashells and a painting of a dog on a surfboard.
Participation is growing every year, said Ernie Sawyer, an assistant principal at Bayside High. Students get to keep any profits; about 400 participated this year, compared with 40 a few years ago.
“It’s been overwhelming,” Sawyer said.
All kinds of art also are welcome among the professional artists, so tents are full of Hawaiian bone carvings, mosaics made of storm-door glass and tooled leather decorated with sea turtles.
Langston hung his tiki mask caricatures alongside bright seascapes. He lives in Virginia Beach and has been surfing since he was 16.
“It’s just one of those things where you get hooked into the lifestyle and culture,” he said.
Michelle Abbitt said it’s easy to be inspired by the ocean when she lives five blocks from the beach. She uses seashells and other materials to make her own tiles for surf-themed mosaics.
“That’s my colors, that’s what I’ve loved,” she said. “It’s kind of funny since I went to high school in Missouri.”
Cindy Lackore said she got hooked on glass art after years of watercolor portraits. She turns her tiny glass crabs, oysters and seashells into pendants.
One of them, shaped like a shark’s tooth, has a drip of red glass like blood. It’s been popular with the surfers, she said laughing.
“I was trying to be gnarly,” she said. Elisabeth Hulette, (757) 222-5216, elisabeth.hulette@pilotonline.com

About Neil
"A southern man don't need him around anyhow.'
What A Great Weekend!
I atteneded the Sunday and Monday afternoon sessions. It looked like to me that everyone was having a great time. 'member, it was a longboard contest, so the waves didn't have to be Mavericks'ish. I thought Mother Ocean turned up quite nicely Monday afternoon. Plenty of nose riding, both guys and gals, and who doesn't like tandem surfing. And the art show was great. People are very talented. VB needs more local contests like this one. A couple of suggestions for Steel Pier Classic and ECSC organizers: someone (a lifeguard?) chasing kids out of the shallows, and someone on a jet ski or boat on the northern boundary to chase off the groms that enter the contest area.
hey,i just had a great
hey,i just had a great idea, let's get neil to play this years ecsc,i mean since they want to turn it into a class competion(with no waves)what better way than to have a true legend and class act to play, then no one would notice there aren't any waves at a surfing competion.

Surfing art to me is the rock group The Ventures followed by the phsychedelic drawings of 60's early 70's.
Sorry about any mis-spellings this morning, I've misplaced my glasses and can't read my .99 cent thrift store purchased 84 Websters(it's a hardback!) Roman Numeral Two New Riverside University Dictionary. Spell check is cheating.

The Ventures heavily influenced Canadian rocker Neil Young. That's pretty cool.
I like Neil with Buffalo Springfield.
i really doubt neil needed
i really doubt neil needed much influence from anyone, when you can write songs like neil, you become a legend and we all know ,you always print about the legend.

Sorry, that came off as sounding like a load of lead.
I am a child, I walk ahwhile, you can see it in my smile.
A better recollection
of Neil is as follows,
I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.
You hold my hand,
rough up my hair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.
God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?
You are a man, you understand.
You pick me up
and you lay me down again.
You make the rules,
you say what's fair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.
God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?
I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive

And the best Neil lyrics for a beach expo....
Maybe The Beach Boys
Have got you now
With those waves
Singing "Caroline No"
Rollin' down
That empty ocean road
Gettin' to the surf on time.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come
With your chrome heart shining
In the sun
Long may you run.
