Daisy dukes? In a music video, yes. In the office, no. Big no.

Posted to: Life Spotlight

So it's gotten a little warm. Scorching, some would say. And I know you want to shed the layers and be all cute and cool in summer attire.

There is a way to do that without showing up at the office looking like Daisy Duke from the 1980s series "The Dukes of Hazzard." Who can forget the hot pants and revealing tops? They're even more egregious in the workplace.

When it comes to shorts, choose a length at the knee or just above. Another option is a pair of cropped pants. Either should be balanced with a dressy or business-casual blouse; a coordinating jacket worn with a shell is even dressier and more versatile.

While you are at it, plunk down the cash for a good multipurpose bra. A convertible one allows you to look tasteful when sporting trendy tops such as those with halter necklines or T-backs, racerbacks and low-cut backs.

Staying chic in the heat, now that's cool.

Learn how to dress!

We have a dress code in our office. Men wear ties and women get away with murder. We had a casual dress code once, but it was the women that abused it!

If I have to wear a coat and tie into the office, then the women should be required to wear business suits with hose and appropriate footwear. You want equality in the workplace? Then dress like it … AND … If you DON’T like this comment then I suggest you learn how to dress!

Learn how to dress! -- Part Duex

After reading this comment, my wife informs that the reason young ladies dress as they do in the office may be attributed to two things. First, the only role models they have are Lady Gaga, Beyonce, or Britney Spears. They believe that dressing this way IS dressing for success. Secondly, young women really don’t have strong role models in the workplace that will mentor them on how to dress professionally; either casual or business attire. My wife attributes this to a common problem in the workplace; women are much more caddy with each other and are less likely to help because the top spots are still not as plentiful for them. She said she deals with it all day long.

You know what? She’s right (as usual).

Tops can be inappropriate too

If a top or dress exposes enough to preclude the use of a standard bra an office worker should also be wearing a sweater, jacket or layering with a less revealing garment. Racer backs, spaghetti straps and plunging necklines (front or back) are for clubbing, the gym and other casual environments.
