The Virginia High School League this week released its master schedule for the 2011 football season. Here is a look at a few of the highlights:

Take the GPS: Granby will travel more than 400 miles in a two-week span. The Comets play at Gloucester on Sept. 9 and then at Woodbridge on Sept. 16. Lake Taylor heads 200-plus miles to George Washington-Danville on Sept. 23.

Stiff competition: Churchland plays at defending Group AAA Division 5 state champ Phoebus on Sept. 9. The Truckers have replaced another Peninsula power – Hampton – with George Washington-Danville, on Sept. 16. Norcom hosts Hampton on Sept. 9. Norview, 0-10 last season, visits perennial Maryland power Eleanor Roosevelt on Sept. 2.

Beach battles: Bayside, the defending Beach District and Eastern Region Division 6 champ, has a tough early schedule, including fellow district contenders Salem on Sept. 2 and Ocean Lakes on Sept. 16.

Earlier than usual: Oscar Smith and Great Bridge have met in their regular-season finale for the previous two years. This season, the rivals meet in their second game – Sept. 9. Another Southeastern District rivalry game – Oscar Smith at Grassfield – is Oct. 28.
