A 14-year-old Cradock Middle School student was charged Tuesday with malicious wounding in connection with an alleged assault on a school bus driver last week, police said.
The student is accused of assaulting the driver in the face and neck Thursday and knocking two of the driver’s front teeth loose, Detective Jan Westerbeck said. The driver was attacked when she stopped the bus to let off students on Carver Circle, police said.
The Virginian-Pilot generally does not name juveniles charged with crimes unless they have been charged as adults.
Reena Mulder, the driver, has worked for Portsmouth schools for six years, said school spokeswoman Maureen Mizelle. Last week, Mizelle said the male student allegedly involved in the incident was suspended.
The driver was treated for facial trauma at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and later received treatment at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, police said. She is on paid leave from her job, said Margaret Buxton, human resources director for Portsmouth schools.
The student, police said, was transported Tuesday to a juvenile detention center in Chesapeake.

This is absolutely horrifying. I know that it's cliched, but what is this world coming to? What has gone wrong in a child's life where he or she so violently attacks an adult to the point where the adult is hospitalized? An adult in a position of authority? Is rehabilitation even an option?

Do you really know how much somthing like this happens yet goes unnoticed. What do you really think is going to happen to this student. He will be placed on probation, during which no one will monitor him, and he will continue to be the same out of control student except this time in an alternative school instead of regular school. The parents will preach about how their child has been done wrong and he will tell his New Directions teachers and class mates he was set up. It's an everyday thing, the only difference is most of the problems are never reported.
