Repairs sideline dredge in Nags Head sand project

Posted to: Environment News North Carolina

NAGS HEAD, N.C.

One of the two dredges that have been pumping sand onto Nags Head beaches since May has been sent to Norfolk for engine repairs, according to a town news release.

The Liberty Island is expected to return to work in mid-July.

Since the project's start May 24, the Liberty Island has pumped nearly 800,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beach. Before needing repairs, the dredge had completed pumping sand south of Jennette's Pier and had moved into the 8200-8300 block of Old Oregon Inlet Road.

Nags Head has contracted with Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company for a $36 million beach nourishment project intended to restore 10 miles of beach and protect oceanfront properties from an encroaching shoreline.

The project is expected to be complete by Oct. 1, according to the news release.
