State redistricting maps win federal approval

Posted to: News Politics State Government Virginia

Maps revising Virginia's legislative districts have been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice for use in the General Assembly elections later this year, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli announced Friday.

Plans to redefine the 140 state House and Senate districts based on census data were submitted to federal authorities for review this spring after the legislature approved them.

Virginia is among the states required to receive clearance from federal authorities for proposed changes to election practices as a condition of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a federal law that seeks to protect minority voting interests.

Cuccinelli said federal approval of Virginia's plan means that legislative primary and general elections will be held on time. It also confirms the state "complied with all legal and constitutional requirements in adopting the new district lines," he said.

Hampton Roads loses representation under the redistricting plan because the region's population growth was outpaced by areas such as Northern Virginia, which gained from the process.

Still unresolved are differences over competing reapportionment plans for Virginia's 11 congressional districts. A select group of lawmakers is working on a compromise.

this is 2011 isn't it?

Unbelievable that in 2011 that some states that had been on the wrong side of treating races equally are still being "supervised" in 2011.

1965 was 46 years ago. Of course it took time to adjust, but DANG, 46 years???? This is 2011 with the Internet, 24-hour news, and people with voices.

What has Virginia done in the last 20+ years that required "adult supervision" from the federal government?

It's time for America to move into the 21st century. It's time for "mama" to cut the apron strings. It's time to take off the "training wheels".

The federal government can at any time in any state file suit, but let's end the requirement to get federal approval to changes to voting NOW! We are adults in an adult world - let's be treated that way.

Don't Tread On Me!

We are still a Nanny state? Government needs to get out of our way to progress!

Why don't the feds just mind

Why don't the feds just mind their own business.
