A vehicle trying to avoid hitting another car accidentally hit a bicyclist around 5 p.m. Saturday on Shore Drive at 83rd Street, near the Oceanfront, according to a police spokeswoman.
The bicyclist had minor injuries, said Grazia Moyers, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Police Department. Shore Drive was shut down briefly because of the accident, Moyers said.
It was the second bicycling incident reported this weekend.
Friday night, a bicyclist suffered minor injuries after hitting the side of a light-rail train in Norfolk.

who said it was a road rider, could of been some surfer on a cruiser with a beer in the cup holder, or an old lady on a pink 3 speed, a kid on a bmx bike..man is the rheotoric from the "cyclist" crowd still that bitter over the fat frogs articles??geez give it a break...no one's going to spend millions on a silly bike lane. i used to race bikes, now i am old and have little children so found new hobbies, now like shooting, nothing like an hour or two behind some high caliber pistols to take the edge off..but i don't go around shooting my pistol everywhere and expect millions in tax dollars to create special shooting ranges..

to say that the driver was specifically aiming for the cyclist and that the light rail train jumped the track, knocked into the cyclist, and jumped back on the track. It's never the biker's fault!

Fix Shore Dr - it is Confusing and Dangerous
For those that do not know this area, this accident occurred at the exact location where Virginia Beach goes from being bike friendly to bike UNFRIENDLY. My guess is that the biker involved was a casual rider as opposed to a serious road biker.
I post several days ago (6/22 - under 'Ft Story Shortcut') this area is confusing and that people would continue to get hurt unless the problem is fixed - I'll bet that right now someone is riding on the median, in the road, or just off the edge of Shore drive not realizing the danger they are facing - a 55 mph road with no bike path.
The quickest fix would be to convert one lane of Shore Dr (inbound to the Beach from First Landing to 82nd Street) into a bike lane.

Of all of the silly ideas I have seen proposed here, your idea, sir, takes the cake! Your proposal to take one lane of road, funded in part by gasoline taxes, and dedicate it to the minority is just plain dumb. The obvious answer is to prohibit bike traffic!

i think that if the bike riders would pay more attention to the cars and not as much to themselves and mayb they should find a different route then shore drive. because of the speed limit its like driving on the interstate would u ride a bike on the interstate um NO then dont do it on shore drive common sense to me

That location on Shore Drive has a 25 mph speed limit - nothing like the "interstate" you mistakenly compare it to.
if the spandex crowd
insists on playing with fire and riding on Shore Drive, that's they're problem if they get burned. Hope they don't but they made THEIR decision to live on the edge. Frankly I'm tired of reading about their ignorance.
bicycle loop
I wonder if lowering the speed limit would help or maybe making t shirts and Bermudas mandatory once one leaves the beach so motorists at the ocean front will not be distracted. Do all the bicyclists riding on the bike loop down on Muddy Creek ride their bikes there or do they put them on their car and drive (wasting gas)to use this bike loop? Why doesn't the city designate the trolley bus lanes as bike lanes and give the bikers a free parking space at one of our public parking lots at the ocean front. Council could also pass an ordinance that only blaze orange full body spandex be worn on shore drive for bicyclists. This comment is so dumb I hope the admin deletes it before too many people read it.
