Virginia poll finds backing for McDonnell, gay adoption

Virginia voters give Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell solid marks for his job performance and have favorable impressions of him, according to poll results released Wednesday that also suggest the public is split on gay marriage and adoption rights.

The 55 percent job approval rating in the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey follows another feather in McDonnell's cap - on Tuesday, Virginia was named best state for business by cable network CNBC.

Twenty-six percent of respondents said they dislike his job performance.

McDonnell generally scored well with independents, Republicans and other demographic groups. A pollster attributed that to voters' perception of the governor as personally likeable even if some disagree with his policies.

Those numbers give McDonnell a popularity advantage over his GOP counterparts in Florida, Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the polling institute.

"Even among Democrats he is within 10 points of parity, an unusually high level of support for a governor from the opposition party," Brown said.

If that remains constant, it could make McDonnell an attractive candidate for the Republican presidential ticket in 2012.

In addition to taking the public's temperature on McDonnell, the Quinnipiac poll sampled attitudes about Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the General Assembly and gay marriage and gay adoption, among other topics.

Bolling has a 39-20 percent positive margin, though 42 percent are undecided about him. Cuccinelli's split is 49-31 percent, with 20 percent undecided.

On the subject of same-sex marriage, 52 percent of voters oppose legalizing it.

Voters addressed the subject nearly five years ago when they approved an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Yet voters support allowing gay couples to adopt children by a 51-43 percent margin. Under current law, married couples and individuals, regardless of their sexuality, are eligible to adopt in Virginia.

The gay adoption debate reignited recently over proposed revisions to regulations for state-licensed private adoption agencies. Gay rights advocates are seeking to prohibit agencies from discriminating against prospective adoptive parents because they are gay. Some faith-based groups disagree, saying they would have to disregard their religious beliefs to meet that standard.

The Quinnipiac poll found that by a 48-45 percent margin, voters favor allowing church-run agencies to disqualify prospective parents because of their sexual orientation.

Claire Guthrie Gastanaga, legislative counsel for the gay rights group Equality Virginia, said the poll results show "public support for gay rights trending upward," a pattern consistent with past public opinion surveys her group has commissioned.

Family Foundation President Victoria Cobb was more skeptical, noting that Virginians have expressed their feelings on gay rights at the ballot box by electing many candidates who don't favor expanding the regulations.

The poll is based on live telephone interviews with 1,434 registered voters conducted June 21-27. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Support

I am saddened that this dialogue is supporting my contention that partisan influenced opinions resolve no issues. What have you accomplished by this dialogue? None of you has looked at giving an inch to any other view except your own. Where do you think that leaves those who need solutions from rational government in order to live decently?

Goes to show

You can never underestimate the intelligence of the voting public.

TRUE.....

"You can never underestimate the intelligence of the voting public."

They elected Obama the Community-Organizer-Vacationer-in-Chief.

He bought a house that needed repairs....2 yrs. later, the House is in WORSE condition.....Solution: BLAME the original Owner......and Go on Vacation Again!

We should rent out the White House and make a few bucks, since No One is ever there!

He's been in "Campaign mode" for the last 2 years! (at our expense!)So far, 35 Fundraisers in the past 60 days!

Like all the other

Like all the other presidents stayed home at the white house. I may not be a big Obama fan but let us please stick with substance. All presidents travel! All! get over it

Of all the pitiful, ridiculous phony and often racist issues

that the "Conservatives" rely on to obscure their miserable record of corporatism, incompetence and failure it is possible that the President is a "vacationer" may be the lamest. A close second is, OMG, he's a politician. Then there is that handy racially charged dog whistle - "community organizer". I see that you have absorbed all of this nonsense and can regurgitate it at will. Are you proud of this accomplishment?

By the way this "vacationer" meme is particularly egregious and intellectually dishonest considering the records in this reguard set by our last President. But then, that IS right out of the Karl Rove playbook - accuse your opponents of having YOUR failings. Say it. Repeat it. Fools will believe. It does not have to be true.

YOU, Sir are the Racist! You

YOU, Sir are the Racist!

You are assuming that All "Community Organizers" are black?

So shallow that you think that "anyone" who disagrees with Obama is Racist?

Too late for you to see this, BUT, you are sooooooo Wrong!

and exactly what kind of record does the POTUS have?

Do you dispute the number of vacations he has taken or not? Instead of defending him by saying something relevant you go off on this tangent of hate mongering on "conservatives" who believe in the free market and the law of supply and demand!

If he wasn't a "community organizer" exactly what was he? Again, you try this stupid game of deflect & distract and never address with fact what you are disputing.

And then you go back to Bush! You people just can't get over Bush! Thus as you pointed out this POTUS is STILL accusing the past POTUS for this economy.

Liberals believe and practice the following: "Tell a lie often enough, loud enough, and long enough, and people will believe you."

Does that ring a bell? You might have to ask Soros.....

There is nothing tangential about my comments

They are spot on our core problem in this country - an egregiously obstructionist, dishonest, hate-filled, demonstably incompetent so-called conservative party - the GOP/Tea.

1. Vacations. There is nothing to "dispute". Whatever the number of days or trips it is totally meaningless and irrelevant. Being POTUS is a 24/7 job.

2. "Community organizer" is part of his background. As was lawyer, college professor, state legislator and United States Senator. He may have also been a boy scout. The emphasis on this small part of his background is a dog whistle for racists. Period.

3. Our economy IS still trying to recover from the Bush years. That is an economic fact. Not convenient for you. But true.

ha ha ha ha! your overuse of adjectives demonstrates your...

...inability to be objective and truthful.

1. So what, he is the Commander In Chief of the armed forces and they only get 30 days a year. "...reguard set by our last President" as you put it implies it was wrong when Bush took time off but not when Uhbama does it.

2. He didn't have any practical experience before assuming the role of POTUS. He has ZERO idea how to govern as is obvious to all.

3. The recession is over...remember? The 2010 summer of recovery took place last year that was supposed to put our economy back on track...remember? He just said that 2011 is the summer of recovery again! He's clueless!

What record does Uhbama have as POTUS? Use facts and stats!

Hate filled? Maybe you missed those sermons by the Rev Wright?

Vacation time?

And the GOP ruled that every other week off would be enjoyed by the house, I guess that doesn't count. and yes, (to go back a few comments) he inherited a house in need of repair. Sometimes you need to to dismantle a house in order to get it functional again (see Extreme Make-over).
