A 71-year-old woman died in a four-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64, west of Oyster Point Road, Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 11 a.m., a 1997 Mercury Tracer got a flat tire while traveling in the right, center lane of I-64 west, a news release from Virginia State Police said. The Mercury’s driver slowed down, turned on the vehicle’s hazard lights and tried to move to the right shoulder. A 2007 Ford Focus slowed behind the Mercury when a 2008 Ford F-150 truck changed lanes to move around slower traffic but didn’t immediately see the Tracer and Focus slowing down.
George Fowler of Newport News tried to stop the truck, but struck the Ford Focus, which then hit the Mercury Tracer.
Carlton Thomas of Newport News, the driver of a 1996 Mercedes lost control, spun around and made contact with the rear passenger side of the Ford Focus.
Pennie Leveem Hampton of Newport News, the driver of the Ford Focus, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center where she later died of her injuries. Her 17-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries.
Creneace Amara Taylor of Newport News, the driver of the Mercury Tracer, suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening. She was also taken to Riverside.
Neither Fowler or Thomas was injured. They were each charged with reckless driving.
