World's Largest Navy Exchange

While the Navy Exchange brass, military and civilian, are full of self-congratulation at the opening of the 2 1/2 football fields long store, this very senior retired military person finds it almost impossible to navigate the huge distances from department to department. Additionally there is a woefully inadequate number of handicap parking places, both at the exchange and at the commissary.

Shodow460, it not only has

Shodow460, it not only has stairs, but escalators and elevators to the second floor. The place is unreal now.

Even bigger?

Wow, that place was pretty good sized when I lived out there. I wonder if the Applebee's is still nearby. Between that, the movie theater, the gas station, the package store, and the NEX, plus Sewell's Point, they had a gargatumous complex as it was!

Now a Chili's

the Applebees has been rebuilt

So much for helping the

So much for helping the local economy.

What a lame comment!

If only you had a clue...a major portion of the sales at the Military exchanges go back into support programs for the service members and their families.

You are correct and I agree

You are correct and I agree with you, but on the other hand the exchange prices are lower than the retail stores and also have the advantage of being sales tax free. It is great for service members and as far as I am concerned they should have every break possible for their service. My off the cuff comment was purely from the standpoint of how the military helps our economy according to city leaders, not implying that there is anything negative about having the Exchange.

Yes and no

I priced a kitchen range at the NEX, $745.00. No tax, but delivery charge of $75.00. Identical range at Sears, "competition listing" was $711.00, plus 5% tax, but no delivery charge.
OTOH, Gas is usually 10-18 cents cheaper at the NEX, (no state tax)
Point is, not everything is cheaper, but that's usually a good way to bet.
Years ago, in Fla, the citizens would regularly raise a fuss about the military taking business away from the local merchants. Navy's response, (back when military was paid in cash) was to pay with $2.00 bills, and determine how much went back into local economy. Usually quieted down the objectors, at least until they forgot, (about a year or so later).

Navy Exchange

As a retired military member, and a current Navy Exchange Employee, I am not sure how people can really think the exchange is cheaper than retail stores. The Macy's, and mall stores maybe, but not Walmart, Kmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. They actually put signs in the exchange that they are something like 28% cheaper than out in town, and even higher level management laugh at those signs. Sure there is no sales tax, but prices are more than the 6% or whatever it is higher than out in town to make up the difference. It is pretty much impossible to get a raise as a NEX employee now, unless you are upper management and get a bonus for the people below you busting their butts, so it will be even more impossible now after the $$ spent here.
